Yuma- the Gateway City

Perhaps you're exploring vacation and weekend getaway ideas? Look no further than Yuma, Arizona for an unforgettable adventure. With daily flights from Phoenix and just a short drive (and your favorite podcast) away, Yuma offers a sense of adventure, unique sights and plenty of ways to stay cool this summer.

 

One of the best reasons to visit Yuma in the heat of the summer is the access to water. With a river literally running right through it, Yuma offers many ways to cool off and have fun. Try paddleboarding, swimming, boating and "float downs" along the Colorado River at Playa Linda or Centennial Beach. Visit Mittry Lake or Senator Wash Reservoir for more boating, tubing, paddling, swimming, and cliff diving. 

 

For a break from the sunshine, explore the city's local sips and relax in air-conditioned accommodations or grab your iced coffee to go and take a drive while you see how many murals you can find around town. Take in some of Yuma's unique and interesting attractions, including Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park or Castle Dome Mine Museum. Both areas offer spectacular views for sunrise if you aim to go earlier in the day. Tip: In the summer months, it's wise to call ahead for hours or the ability to schedule tours. The crowds are a bit smaller in the heat of summer but that means more opportunity for you to take your time, explore and get an authentically intimate tour. If you happen to tour Castle Done Mine with owner, Alan Armstrong, you are in for a treat! He has an obvious passion for history and preservation.   

 

Take a trip to Mexico for a two-nation vacation and discover the rich culture and history of the region. Tip: Rolls and Bowls is a must-stop in San Luis for Japanese-Mexican Fusion. If you have the opportunity to see the chef and owner, Abraham Andrade, in action in the kitchen, stop and enjoy! He puts on a great show and delivers some really tasty food and beverages.

 

For those with kiddos in tow, be sure to visit the brand new Children's Museum in Historic Downtown Yuma. Then head down to the Yuma Visitor Information Center, where you can pick up the award-winning 2023 Yuma Travel Guide, brochures, and some of the cutest desert souvenirs to take home- from javelina stuffed animals and locally made treats to Yuma stickers and postcards.
