International Balloon Fiesta
October 3, 2015 @ 1:00 pm - October 17, 2015 @ 7:00 pm UTC+0
Visitors to the International Balloon Fiesta will have a chance to experience the true Southwest in Sierra County, New Mexico, where several events will take place concurrently with the fiesta including the Sierra County State Fair, Oktoberfest, Spaceport America tours, Art Hop, and more.
Beginning on Oct. 3, Sierra del Rio Golf Course at Turtleback Mountain in Elephant Butte, New Mexico – home to the state’s largest body of water – will enliven the area with their Oktoberfest celebration from 1–7 p.m. Visitors will receive a commemorative beer stein with their $10 admission, and can hear live polka music by the Oom-Pah-Sters while enjoying traditional German foods. Children 12 and under are free. Tickets are available at the door.
From a “Pee Wee Pig Show” to arts and crafts, visitors can experience the Sierra County Fair, Oct. 8–11 at the Sierra County Fairgrounds in Truth or Consequences (T or C). There is no entry fee, and doors open at 9 a.m.
Classic car lovers can see a variety of hard-to-find vehicles while sipping a glass of wine and listening to live music at the “In the Park Classic Car Show” on Saturday, Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will be held at the Cedar Cove RV Park in Elephant Butte and there is no admission charge. Along with food vendors, wine tasting will be available. The car show begins at 11 a.m. followed by an awards presentation at 3:30 p.m. Entry into the contest is $15 per vehicle and will benefit the Hot Springs High School Marching Band.
When the car show is over, visitors can head to downtown T or C for their energetic “Second Saturday Art Hop” when galleries, studios, shops and restaurants stay open later from 6–9 p.m. to give visitors a chance to purchase art and items created by locals.
A stop in Sierra County wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Spaceport America. Tours of the launch area are offered Thursdays through Mondays at 9 a.m. and leave from the Spaceport America Visitor Center in T or C. Reservations are required. Tickets are $59 for adults; $49 for children ages 13-17; and $29 for children 12 and under. For more information visit sierracountynewmexico.info/attractions/visit-spaceport-america/
