POPnology at Arizona Science Center

March 12, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm UTC+0

Arizona Science Center has partnered with Stage Nine Exhibits, the producer of the new pop-culture and technology inspired exhibition, POPnologyTM, to develop an event series that focuses on notable figures featured in the exhibition.
POPnology opened at the Center on Feb 7. This exhibition makes the connections on how technology has been influenced by movies, books, television and art. In this 3-part event series industry leaders will focus on the past, present and future of technologies that have been, and continue to be, inspired by popular culture.

“Futuristic and innovative thinking has been essential to our survival. Innovative thinking can take us on the paths we have not yet explored and allow us to visualize the future. We hope the exhibit and these events inspire guests to dream big!” said Chevy Humphrey, President and CEO of Arizona Science Center.

Walt Disney was known for his influence and contributions to entertainment during the 20th century as an innovator in animation and theme park design. On Saturday, Mar 12 the first event will kick off at 6:00 p.m. with a lecture entitled Dream It, Do It – How Disney Legends Bob Gurr and David Bossert’s Work Became The Inspiration of POPnologyTM.
Led by David Bossert, Author, Producer, Creative Director & Head of Classic Projects, Walt Disney Animation Studios at The Walt Disney Co. and Bob Gurr, former Principal Designer and Imagineer, at The Walt Disney Co, this evening discussion will examine what inspiration, creativity and innovating thinking helped lead to the development of Walt’s visions, and how he influenced the design of POPnology.

David has worked on such films as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Fantasia 2000 and the Academy Award-nominated Disney/Dali short film Desitno, along with authoring DALI AND DISNEY: DESTINO, The Story, Artwork, and Friendship Behind the Legendary Film, and Bob, who’s famous work was for Disneyland Park and its subsequent sister parks, is said to have designed most, if not all, of the ride vehicles of the Disneyland attractions, including Autopia, Haunted Mansion, the Disneyland Monorail, the Submarine Voyage, and the Matterhorn Bobsleds. He was named a Disney Legend in 2004. He also worked on the King Kong Encounter animatronic for Universal Studios Hollywood.

Every event will feature a special something and of course there will be entrance to the POPnology exhibition, cash bar, music, food and fun! Guests must be 18+ to attend. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased online at azscience.org.
