SAWC is pronounced like saucy. “We are saucy women having a fine time singing together,” said longtime artistic director Terrie Ashbaugh. “Our mission is to perform a versatile and varied choral repertoire for women’s voices in order to benefit and educate the diverse Southern Arizona community and beyond.” The 70-plus member group presents two major concerts a year, plus numerous community outreach programs throughout the season, including some daytime and some evening programs.
SAWC is accepting new members. Rehearsals are held Mondays from 7 to 9 p.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church. Ashbaugh said, “The music is extremely diverse and sometimes very difficult. Learning the music in a fun and encouraging environment keeps our vocalists coming back for more. Singing with this chorus provides a deep sense of accomplishment and a sense of belonging that comes from the caring and support these women extend to each other.” Regular chorus rehearsals continue through May. Ashbaugh has conducted SAWC since 1998 and led the chorus in its 2006 Carnegie Hall debut. The choir’s roots date to 1981.The repertoire spans from classical music to Broadway, folk, jazz, spiritual, seasonal and other popular songs. SAWC is a member of Chorus America and the Arizona Choral Arts Association, which Ashbaugh founded. She also is director of worship and business manager at Ascension Lutheran Church and School.
