Enjoy some post-thanksgiving hip-hop when Rigo Entertainment brings Tekashi 6IX9INE to the Valley’s historic Celebrity Theatre at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, November 23rd.
Tekashi 6IX9INE’s music career took off in earnest at the end of last year. On December 2, 2017, his now-platinum single “GUMMO” first appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, eventually peaking at No. 12. Shortly afterwards, 6IX9INE announced his debut mixtape, Day69. The mixtape was released on February 23, 2018, and debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 album chart with 55,000 album-equivalent units, of which 20,000 were pure sales. According to Jon Caramanica of The New York Times, the tape was an outgrowth of the “SoundCloud rap explosion,” and was notable for its willingness to deviate from hip-hop’s prevailing sound. A string of hits that racked up hundreds of millions of YouTube views followed, including “BEBE,” “Gotti,” and “FEFE,” the Nicki Minaj collaboration that peaked at No. 3.
The 22-year-old rainbow-haired, rainbow-plated rapper is known for his unconventional appearance, controversial behavior and brute-force screaming technique in some of his songs. 6IX9INE was born Daniel Hernandez in Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York to a Mexican mother (from Atlixco) and a Puerto Rican father. In 2009, his father was murdered, which led to Hernandez working various jobs and selling marijuana in order to help his mother financially. He went on to become a successful rapper and one of the most controversial figures in the genre today. Hernandez recently took a trip to Mexico to meet family members for the first time. He walked around the streets and gave out cash to community members. He also took a stroll to his mother’s elementary school and donated money to the students and teachers.
