Yonatan Gat’s single, “Medicine” Tour
April 24, 2018 @ 8:00 pm - May 22, 2018 @ 8:00 pm MST
NOWNESS has shared Yonatan Gat’s video for his single “Medicine”, which features the Algonquin Native American group Eastern Medicine Singers. The track, along with previous face-melting single “Cockfight” (which took its cue from Balinese gamelan) and eight other tracks, will be featured on his forthcoming album ‘Universalists’ out May 4th on Joyful Noise Recordings (US) and Glitterbeat (EU). The track also premiered on Magnet.
Universalists lists numerous collaborators, the most intriguing being Silver Jews frontman David Berman credited as album co-producer, particularly since Berman has released little to no new music in the last ten years. Other contributions come from producers such as Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening), Daniel Schlett (Ghostface Killah), and many others.
The video for centerpiece track, Medicine, blurs the border between music video and documentary. Set in a violent snowstorm, the 16mm camera patiently explores Yonatan’s collaboration with The Eastern Medicine Singers – performances that received wide accolades from NPR and other outlets following dazzling appearances in this year’s SXSW.
Discussing the video and track Yonatan says “the Eastern Medicine Singer’s drum is pulsating, repetitive, ritualistic, creating music that is a religious ceremony. In the video, as in the centre a blizzard, you have the timeless feeling of being put in a trance – allowing yourself to truly surrender to nature.”
When talking about the roots of their collaboration, Gat adds, “First time I saw the Eastern Medicine Singers they were playing outside the venue just before we went on. I loved their music and asked if they wanted to join us. We never met before, and they immediately replied – “no”. But by the second song they were hauling their gigantic drum inside and we formed two circles inside the audience – their group and ours with the audience surrounding both bands. People were banging on the musicians’ backs – crying, dancing, trancing. This recording is a document of our collaboration, recorded in a live session with over 20 musicians all playing at the same time in Machines with Magnets studios in Providence. Other special guests playing with us at the session were Thor Harris (Swans) and his full band.”
To celebrate the album’s release Yonatan will perform two rare, intimate concerts in Philadelphia and Washington DC showcasing both his collaboration with the Eastern Medicine Singers, and a new collaboration with Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier (performing late 19th century composer Antonín Dvořák’s “American” String Quartet in its entirety), parts of both projects being included in Universalists. The Eastern Medicine Singers will also be joining Yonatan on his May 5th album release concert in NYC’s Le Poisson Rouge.
