Surgical Technician

You'll find that surgical technician is one of the fastest growing careers in the country: that's why so many people are considering it as a degree or a program of training at a vocational school.

According to the Bureau of Labor statistics there are two reasons for this. The first is that surgery is becoming ever more complex. This means that doctors and nurses are now such specialists that they need more practical people to help them out. The second is that as we all live longer we all need more surgical repairs over our life.

What's the training?

There are three major ways for you to become a surgical technician. Do the job for many years, go to school for your training or take a degree. There are also hospital run training programs and other school options in the military.

Employers like you to have either training from a vocational school certification program or a degree from a community college. They think this makes it easier for you to train further and become more specialist yourself.

How good is the job as a surgical technician?

The definition of a “good job” depends upon you of course but the money, an average of $34,000 a year, is pretty good. You'll probably be working in a hospital, clean, well lit and well ventilated. There are opportunities for you to advance by taking further training and becoming a specialist in one particular area.

Most importantly, of course, you'll know that you are doing good by helping people to get well again.
