The Art of
The Polar Express

By Mark Cotta Vaz and Steve Starkey
with a Foreword by Robert Zemeckis

The Academy Award-winning team of Tom Hanks and director, Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Cast Away) reunite for The Polar Express, an inspiring adventure based on the beloved children's book by Chris Van Allsburg.

When a doubting young boy takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows him the wonders of life never fades for those who believe.

Using the original book as a touchpoint, Zemeckis' team has created a rich, evocative, and poignant fable that promises to become as much of classic as the original book.

In THE ART OF POLAR EXPRESS, authors Mark Cotta Vaz and Steve Starkey show readers the amazing process behind the film.

Sony Pictures Imageworks, an Oscar winner for its innovative work, with production designers Doug Chiang and Rick Carter, help bring this enchanting holiday story vividly to life through Imageworks' groundbreaking next-generation motion capture process, that allows live-action performances to drive the emotions and movements of the digital characters.

THE ART OF POLAR EXPRESS pulls together the fabulous and otherwise never-seen movie concept art with quotes from the creative team of artists, designers, and directors.

THE ART OF POLAR EXPRESS culls the best of the film's concept art and wonderfully illustrates the process behind the animation. Notes and drawings offer insight into the multi-layered creative process, while images in various stages of development reveal the evolution of the backgrounds and characters. It's all here - from quick pencil sketches and lighting studies to pastel storyboards and digital images.

In addition, THE ART OF POLAR EXPRESS includes a wealth of commentary by the creative forces behind the movie, from producers and writers to character designers and art directors.

These talented individuals explain how their ideas and visions are shaped, how the colors and lighting are developed, and how they balance realism with the fantasy of animation. This book will enthrall the animation audience and Polar Express fans.

One couldn't select a more delightful and exciting premise for a children's book than the tale of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve only to have Santa Claus sweep by and take him on a trip with other children to the North Pole.
