The 25th Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival announced the winners of the 2010 festival competition. The SBIFF celebrated its Silver Anniversary February 4-14, 2010.  By the look of the theaters you'd never know the economy was in the fight of its life as audiences packed the theaters for the last 11 days, proving once again how powerful the art of film can be.

HEARTLAND NAMES TOP TEN “TRULY MOVING PICTURES” FOR 2009. In conjunction with the start of awards season, Heartland Truly Moving Pictures is honoring the films that it has deemed the Top 10 “Truly Moving Pictures” of 2009. These “top ten” films were chosen from the total 22 films that were bestowed with the Heartland Truly Moving Picture Award in 2009. The award was created by Heartland Truly Moving Pictures as a way to honor theatrically released films that meet Heartland’s mission of emphasizing the best of the human spirit. When the two Toy Story series 1 and 2 returned to movie theaters on October 2, 2009, both films came not only as a double feature, but also in 3D. The double feature was a prelude to Toy Story 3 expected in theaters on June 18, 2010.

The complete lineup of films and special events for the 2009 Heartland Film Festival was announced by Heartland Truly Moving Pictures President and CEO, Jeffrey L. Sparks during the annual Announcement Celebration. The 18th annual Heartland Film Festival will take place October 15-24, 2009 and will bring a record 87 films from around the world to Indianapolis.

The Tiger Next Door “Dennis Hill breeds and sells tigers from his backyard... Can he win his battle to keep his tigers?  Do we want him to?”  Thus the festival card for The Tiger Next Door promotes this feature documentary that had its U.S. premiere at the Indianapolis International Film Festival.

The upcoming Michael Jackson film, "This Is It" is drawn from the legendary entertainer's last concert rehearsals. The new movie contains Behind-The-Scenes footage. "This Is It" will be released October 30, 2009 in High Definition with Digital Sound from Sony Entertainment.

After only 14-days in release, the worldwide hit "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" became the 2nd fastest film in movie history to earn $300 million in U.S. ticket sales, eclipsing the previous record-holder "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," by 2-days. From director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg, the Paramount Pictures release trails only "The Dark Knight" in this record-setting achievement.

'Red Dawn' remake. Josh Peck and Adrianne Palicki have been cast in MGM/UA's remake of "Red Dawn," set to begin filming in September. They join the already cast Chris Hemsworth in the story of a group of teenagers who form an impromptu insurgency when their town is invaded by Chinese and Russian soldiers.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine and J. J. Abrams' Star Trek don't open until May 1st and May 8th, respectively, but Fandango, the nation's leading moviegoer destination, is already seeing brisk advance ticket sales for the two highly-anticipated summer movies. Fandango is reporting that dozens of opening weekend show times for the two films are sold out across the country from New York and Los Angeles to Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Sean PennMGM and the Farrelly brothers are closing in on their cast for "The Three Stooges." The studio has set Sean Penn to play Larry, and negotiations are underway with Jim Carrey to play Curly, with the actor already making plans to gain 40 pounds to approximate the physical dimensions of Jerome "Curly" Howard.

At this year’s 2009 Santa Barbara International Film Festival, there were two live-action shorts in the Apple Box Shorts program, i.e. the family films, that we especially liked – and for which we were lucky enough to meet the filmmakers.  That is, of course, one of the pleasures of film festivals. One of those films was Alex’s Halloween.  In this article, you’re going to hear about Alex’s Halloween, written and directed by Daniel Persitz. Disneynature, the first new film label to be introduced by Disney in 60 years, will celebrate its premiere film, “EARTH,” being released nationally on April 22, Earth Day, by planting a tree in honor of every moviegoer who sees the film in its opening week.
