The original Phantom of the Opera movie

Phantom of the OperaMost prints of The Phantom of the Opera are from the 1925 original silent film. The Phantom of the Opera was remade several times after.

In 1943, director Arthur Lubin had produced a 92-minute long color version. He was an Oscar winner for Cinematography and Art Direction for the film.

In 1962, the Phantom of the Opera was directed by Terence Disher, starring Herbert Lom, Heather Sears. 84 minute British production.

In 1989, director Dwight H. Little produced the fourth version of Phantom of the Opera with Robert England and Jill Schoelen. Shot in Budapest, but set in London.

The 1999 Italian version of The Phantom of the Opera was directed by Dario Argento.

The most commonly available version, this release is visual-only representation with musical accompaniment) of the 1929 sound reissue for foreign markets (note that the title sequence and Carlotta's Phantom of the Operaperformance as Marguerite are shot at sound speed of 24 frames per second) and is the best surviving 35mm version of the film (the 1925 general release version only exists in 16mm show-at-home prints and is of very poor quality).

The film presented here is the most commonly available version of The Phantom of the Opera. This film is a colorized re-edit of the 1925 version.

Phantom of the OperaAccording to archive.org, this print is a DVD rip from the milestone edition, with the man with lantern sequence edited in. It is the best available print of the film from the UCLA film and television archives. The soundtrack is Symphony No. 8 in B minor, best known as the "Unfinished Symphony". It is not the best soundtrack for the film, but I was unsure whether or not the 1929 soundtrack is in the public domain. Staring Lon Chaney, Mary Philbin and Norman Kerry. Directed by Rupert Julian, Edward Sedgwick, and Lon Chaney.
