The 2008Tony® Award Winning Best Musical IN THE HEIGHTS is a moving, funny and uplifting show about a community of hard-working immigrants seeking a better life and trying to find their place their home in their new country.
IN THE HEIGHTS is currently playing at the Winspear Opera House for a limited engagement beginning Tuesday, March 13 through Sunday, March 25 and is a presentation of the Lexus Broadway Series.
With a remarkable young cast, thrilling Tony Award-winning score, In The Heights is an exhilarating journey into a vibrant Manhattan community. Experience the next chapter of the classic American story at the most joyous exciting musical on Broadway.
This story takes place in a Manhattan neighborhood, it tells the story of families and neighbors struggling with the changes and sacrifices and their dreams and aspirations.
The musical is an affectionate portrait of the Hispanic Community in Manhattan's Washington Heights, showcasing hip-hop, salsa, merengue and soul music. Perry Young (Usnavi) courts Presilah Nunez (Vanessa) and dreams of opening a bar back home in the Dominican Republic.
Virginia Cavaliere (Nina) is in love with Kyle Carter (Benny), but her father is against their union because he wants Nina to complete her education at Stanford University, and is prepared to sell his business to finance her. In the meantime their friend Christina Aranda (Abuela Claudia) wins $96,000 in the lottery and the characters in the musical find their purpose in life they have been searching for.
In The Heights never slows down. It swings between English and Spanish, between rap and salsa. The dancing becomes a visual poetry with a choreography that is impressive as it swings from one end of the stage to the other. The music is memorable. The characters are well rounded and real. The story was written well and is for anyone living in the 2000s.
