Toros 2011 on hiatus- promotes community events

The Tucson Toros baseball team will go on hiatus for the duration of the 2011 Golden Baseball League regular season.

The decision was made in anticipation of Triple-A baseball temporarily returning to Tucson.

“The Toros organization worked actively to help bring the Portland Beavers franchise, a Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, back to Tucson if only on a temporary basis,” said Toros owner Jay Zucker.

The Toros are also looking into the possibility of an Independent All-Star Game at Hi Corbett for the second consecutive year after last year’s successful contest between the Golden Baseball League and the Northern League.

“The Toros organization worked actively to help bring the Portland Beavers franchise, a Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, back to Tucson if only on a temporary basis,” said Toros owner Jay Zucker.

“However, the Padres decided to locate the team at Tucson Electric Park.  Therefore, your Tucson Toros will respectfully not play next season during the Portland Beavers stay in Tucson, but we will continue to pursue affordable family friendly entertainment through both community and baseball related events.”

Tucson has already received commitments of participation from the Calgary Vipers and the Edmonton Capitals for Minor League Spring Training, which will begin in mid May.

The games, taking place at Hi Corbett, will be a great chance for fans to enjoy affordable entertainment with tickets costing just $5 and $1 hot dogs every game.  The schedule will also feature Fireworks Fridays and the team’s signature Thirsty Thursday events.

In addition to continued involvement in baseball, the Toros plan to host several community events throughout the year, including a Fitness & Wellness Festival, Toros Fantasy Baseball Camp, Cinco de Mayo Festival, Star Spangled Spectacular and Thirsty Thursday’s showcasing local musicians throughout the summer.

“I am proud of the championship caliber team we developed in Tucson,” stated Sean Smock, General Manager of the Toros.  “When the Portland Beavers leave in a year, we look forward to continuing the Toros tradition at Hi Corbett Field.”

Major League Soccer came to Tucson

The 2011 Major League Soccer Desert Cup featuring the New York Red Bulls and Sporting Kansas City was the most important professional soccer event in Tucson’s history.

This two-day event marked the first time MLS teams have ever played in the Old Pueblo. It also marks the home debut of FC Tucson, our new semi-pro team featuring Tucson’s best local talent.

Over the two days, two of the nation’s premier soccer teams squared off against each other as well as challenge local Arizona clubs FC Tucson and the Phoenix Sahuaros.

The MLS team’s rosters are replete with international stars including Thierry Henry, star of the French National team and striker for Arsenal in the English Premier League, Omar Bravo, hero of Chivas in the Mexican League, and Defender Rafael Marquez, beloved captain the Mexican National squad and Barcelona FC in Spain’s Premier Soccer League.

This event will took place on Friday, March 4th and Saturday, March 5th, 6 pm nightly, at Hi Corbett Field. The past Spring training home of the Colorado Rockies was filled in with 10,000 square feet of sod to accommodate a soccer game of this magnitude. This is another historical first!

This unique event also provides an exceptional opportunity for demonstrating our communities support of the MLS, a growing professional sports organization.

The potential for growth in this sport and with this league is tremendous, opportunities for Tucson to be involved, include The Desert Cup’s potential as a recurring one time annual sporting attraction, developing an ongoing relationship with MLS by showing them the level of support they can expect to receive as a potential future MLS Spring Training destination and perhaps more.

The Desert Cup, hosted by FC Tucson Events, working in collaboration with local leaders, The Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Metropolitan Tucson Convention & Visitor Bureau, and other community partners will showcase Tucson’s best to the National soccer community and beyond.

The Health & Fitness Festival will be a great source of information on all aspects of personal well being including exercise, nutrition, health care and going green with environmentally friendly lifestyle choices.
