Travel Channel is introducing a really funny new show on June 3 (from some of the same people behind Borat) called Lawrence of America, and we have some great content that I'd like to offer you.
Much like Borat, Lawrence is new to America and our traditions and pastimes (he's British), but he gets in there and tries everything that he reports on, often with very funny results.
“Finding the truth is my passion,” says Lawrence. “It’s the only thing I ever think about…apart from cake.” He considers himself one of the world’s great journalists - even if no one else does.
In this new twelve-episode series, Lawrence immerses himself in America’s numerous and diverse subcultures. He mingles with NASCAR fans in North Carolina to drive in a real, death-defying race, camps; drinks and fights as a Confederate soldier in choreographed battles with Civil War re-enactors in Pennsylvania; learns to defy gravity as a NASA astronaut trainee in Florida; and even discovers what puts the “sin” in Sin City a.k.a. Las Vegas, Nevada.
His approach to journalistic reporting is simple. “I’m a toucher not a watcher. I firmly believe the truth will only be revealed if I jump in and get my hands dirty. I’m not saying literally dirty because sometimes that can be disgusting,” says Lawrence.
LAWRENCE OF AMERICA is Travel Channel’s first original series produced for its 11 PM time slot. With comedic elements throughout, LAWRENCE OF AMERICA takes a revealing look at diversity in all its glory.
LAWRENCE OF AMERICA is produced for Travel Channel by Wombat Productions. Tim Schildberger and Susannah Julien Barnes are the executive producers for Wombat Productions. David E. Gerber is executive producer for Travel Channel. Phoos coutresy of Travel Channel.
Lawrence Beldon-Smythe Bio
Lawrence Beldon-Smythe was born in England in the 1970’s. Ever since he was a child, his two major hobbies have been investigative journalism, and dentistry. And hairdressing. But mostly the journalism thing.
After finishing his formal education at various literate institutions, including boarding school, Lawrence embarked on a media career…preferring to keep dentistry as a relaxing hobby.
His big break came with a lengthy stint working in nature documentaries for a large and important British Production Company. It was there, while logging footage for a documentary on the mating habits of Argentinean fruit bats – Lawrence fell in love with travel.
Although he barely left a darkened editing room filled with images of obscure animals for the next decade, he knew one day a plane ticket, passport and uncomfortable neck pillow would be his.
America was always his first choice for an in depth investigation. He’s been fascinated with the country since being told they invented doughnuts. (He’s a big fan of cake related items).
Lawrence firmly believed America was one of the least understood nations on earth…and only his unique combination of curiosity, charisma and charm would enable Americans to show their true selves.
So – he began bombarding the American Travel Channel with his own, independently produced short video reports, hoping to convince them he was the man who could reveal the truth.
Eventually, they were worn down enough to give him a chance. He may not have any credentials, much experience, or much of a clue about anything other than Argentinean fruit bats, but he does have an overwhelming desire to learn about this giant, misunderstood, cliché filled country. Plus he was willing to work for very little money.
Lawrence Beldon-Smythe … Englishman, truth seeker, cake lover and history’s next great global correspondent. According to Lawrence anyway. And his mother.
