Toros Win Second Straight
5/30/09 The Tucson Toros defeated the Orange County Flyers 3 to 1 on Saturday night at Hi Corbett Field. The victory is the second in a row for the Toros.
Toros Starting Pitcher Dan Knox (1-0) was brilliant in his first start of the season. He threw 7 strong innings allowing only one run off of three hits. Knox struck out eight of the twenty-two batters that he faced, including retiring the last eleven. It is Knox’s first victory on the season.
The Toros received a nice contribution from the bottom half of their lineup. 3B Mayo Santana and C Luis Apodaca went 1-4 with an RBI batting in the 7th and 8th hole, and SS Franklin Gonzalez went 2-3 with an RBI in the 9th hole.
2B Skip Adams extended his hitting streak to six games. He has now reached base safely in every single game of the season. Flyers C Frank LoNigro accounted for OC’s only run when homered to deep left field in the 3rd inning.
The Toros move to 3-3 on the season, and the Flyers drop to 0-5. The Toros look to go for the series sweep and the first ever in GBL Toros history. The Toros will send Danny Greenwalt to the mound, and Matt Durkin will get the nod for Orange County. Game time is 7:00 pm, for Dollar Dog Sunday.
Sun., May 24: Toros Lose Heartbreaker
The Tucson Toros (1-3) lost their third straight decision Sunday night, dropping the decision 8-4 to the Chico Outlaws at Hi Corbett Field. The crowd of 4,173 for “Dollar Dog Sunday” saw a hard fought game, that unfortunately slipped away from the Toros in the latter innings.
Toros starting pitcher Toby Nordman made his impressive professional debut. He threw 6 strong innings, scattering 8 hits and allowing 3 runs only 1 of which was earned, and earned the no decision.
Chico DH Gabriel Riley provided the power for Chico, going 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored and an RBI. Chico LF Truan Mehl added a 3-RBI triple in the top of the ninth to break open the game.
The Toros announced two roster moves before the game. Starting pitcher Blake Eager was released, and P Mark Rosen was added to the roster. Rosen (0-1) faced 5 batters in 1 inning allowing 1 ER via 1 hit.
The Toros next game comes at home against the Orange County Flyers on Fireworks Friday, May 29th. This will be the opening game of a 3 game set.

The new Tucson Toros baseball team took to Hi Corbett Field on May 21, 2009. The Toros returned to the local baseball scene as an Independent Professional Baseball League team playing 40 games at Hi Corbett Field (named for Hiram Corbett) in Tucson and 40 games on the road.
Tucson Toros owner Jay Zucker brought an expansion team of the Golden Baseball League to Tucson. The new team name would be the the same team that played in Tucson at Hi Corbett Field from 1969 through 1997. Zucker sold the Tucson Sidewinders baseball team which moved to Reno, Nevada.

The Tucson Toros and Hi Corbett field holds much history and memories among Tucsonans. The Tucson Toros 2009 will take the field late May as an Independent Professional Baseball League team playing 40 games at Hi Corbett and 40 games on the road. Over the past three seasons, the GBL has featured such baseball greats as Rickey Henderson and José Canseco, along with 40 other former Major League players and top Minor League prospects. Tucson, Arizona baseball actually began in 1915. Before the Tucson Toros, there were about a half dozen different teams playing in Tucson.
