And now, for something completely different in comic conventions…
ACE con is certainly different from the norm. Gareb Shamus and ACE Universe turned a large hockey rink stadium into a very good comic convention. The ice was covered and partitioned into two areas with a huge curtain. Part of it was the main stage, and the rest the vendors area. All of the levels were used for artists, writers, and others, giving the attendees a lot to see and do.
Every one attending was able to watch the panels and interviews at the main stage thanks to large “Jumbotron” tv screens viewable all over the facility. We really like this. The format is a good way to make use of the stadium facilities.
The panels were fun. Stan Lee is still his amazing self. So much energy and imagination. We have been Stan’s fans since we could read, way back in the last century. The avengers panel was terrific.
The con ran very smooth. Security was easy to negotiate, with different gates open. All of the staff we met were helpful and friendly. They seemed to be enjoying the experience as much as everyone else.
The food stalls were popular, and pricey. Although alcohol was available, we didn’t see anyone drunk. Probably couldn’t afford to be!
ACE was a fun convention. We are looking forward to coming back next year!
