Arizona Mystery Writers Contest

Monday, January 28, 2019 - Saturday, June 1, 2019

Can You Write a Mystery? Two Contests on Now! The Arizona Mystery Writers sponsors two contests every year at this time: one for children and one for adults. They both start accepting entries on January 1 so both are open now. Can you write a mystery? Or a thriller? Any type of suspense story (not horror please) is welcomed.

Every story will be read by three judges, who will send you their critiques, whether you win or not. Their critiques are always constructive, advice on how to improve your tale or maybe even handing out praise. And you can win a prize!

Arizona Mystery Writers
Mary Ann Hutchison Memorial Story Contest For Youth

Restricted to ages 9 through 14, this contest honors one of our most beloved members, Mary Ann Hutchison, author of Moochi’s Mariachis and Joey’s Morning: The Legacy of a Therapy Horse. The contest is free to enter and you can enter more than once.

What do you get if you win?

First prize – $25
Second prize – $20
Third prize – $15

What else?

You get a certificate of acknowledgment for the winners, Also applause and a free lunch at the awards ceremony on July 13, 2019. Your story will be posted on the Arizona Mystery Writers website for all to see. This gives you validation as a real writer. That means you can tell your friends that you are a published (sort of) author.

The judging is blind. That means you must not put your name or any identifying information on the story. The judges then have no idea who wrote the stories.

The entry forms, requirements, information, judging criteria, etc. are all on the website:

And did I mention that it’s FREE to enter? Entries are accepted from now until midnight on May 1.

So start writing!

Arizona Mystery Writers
Jim Martin Memorial Story Contest

This contest is for everyone 15 and older. Jim Martin was another of our members, a man who contributed a lot to the group and to the people around him. This contest unfortunately is not free. It costs $15 to enter. The money goes to the prizes.

The story has to be a suspense story, preferably a mystery or thriller. It needs to be less than 2500 words or about 10 pages, double spaced.

The judging is blind. Please do not put your name or any identifying information on the story you submit. This contest is open from January 1 to midnight on June 1.

What do you get if you win?

First prize – $200
Second prize – $100
Third prize – $75

In addition you’ll get a certificate of acknowledgment presented at a free luncheon (yes – there is such a thing as a free lunch) at the awards ceremony on September 14, 2019. You’ll also be roundly applauded. Your story will be posted on the Arizona Mystery Writers website so we can all read it.

The judges will critique your story and send you their comments. The comments are always constructive and sometimes overflowing with praise.

Find all the information, entry forms, etc. on the website:

So start exercising your fingers and your imagination. Send us stories – more than one if you wish. We are dying to read them and find the winners.
