Ballet Tucson 2017-2018

Friday, October 6, 2017 @ 8:00 am - Thursday, June 21, 2018 @ 5:00 pm MST

Ballet Tucson opens its 2017-2018 season with three exciting ballets. The Fall Concert “Balanchine & More” is a triple bill of classical, neo-classical and contemporary style ballets.

Ballet Tucson is pleased to present its second work by the immortal genius and foremost dancemaker of the 20th century George Balanchine. Walpurgisnacht Ballet is presented with special permission by the Balanchine Trust.

Walpurgisnacht Ballet is an enduring ballet in the repertoire of the New York City Ballet and is a joyous dance revelry set to excerpts from Gounod’s Faust. Ballet Tucson’s Founding Artistic Director, Mary Beth Cabana has performed many leading roles in Balanchine ballets and is thrilled to have her company of dancers experiences the speed, musicality and abandon of Walpurgisnacht Ballet. “Dancing in a Balanchine ballet is certainly the highlight of any dancer’s professional career. Now we are able to present these works to our audience here in Tucson and it is truly a dream come true!”

Author and former soloist with the New York City Ballet, Zippora Karz returns to set and coach this ballet. Ms. Karz is one of a handful of dance professionals entrusted to maintain and pass on the choreography and legacy of “Mr. B.” She worked with the company in 2016 on its successful debut of Serenade. One of Balanchine’s most famous quotes was “Ballet is Woman.” Walpurgisnacht Ballet certainly exemplifies that with a cast of 24 women in soft dresses in shades of purple and only one man engulfed by the women wearing a billowy ivory blouse.

Phantom of the Opera – the ballet, made its debut in 2014 to great audience response. Back this season by popular request, this original ballet combines classical and contemporary ballet styles. Based on the 1925 silent film, murder and mayhem are the order of the day at the Paris Opera. Dynamic choreography created by Chieko Imada and Mary Beth Cabana and visually stunning costumes and scenic effects make this ballet appealing for the whole family. Principal Dancers Jenna Johnson, Megan Steffens, Isaiah Sumler and Mauricio Vergara will be featured in leading roles.

Paquita – Grand Pas Classique is a corner stone of the classical ballet repertoire. This ballet displays Spanish-style dance-infused with bold expression, technical virtuosity and spirited music by Ludwig Minkus. Ballet Tucson has commissioned vibrant red faille and black lace tutus for its large cast of ballerinas. The men will don matador style bolero jackets while accompanying Ballet Tucson’s coquettish female dancers. Paquita makes a rousing finale to a memorable season opening concert!

Balanchine & More is Ballet Tucson at its finest. This very special season opening concert is not to be missed.
