Ballet Tucson BT2

Saturday, May 20, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - Sunday, May 21, 2017 @ 2:00 pm MST

BT2, Tucson’s exceptional youth ballet presents its end-of-year concert on May 20-21 at the Stevie Eller Dance Theatre. Featured is the famous Romantic-era ballet Les Sylphides performed to the haunting music of the great composer Frederic Chopin. BT2 member Abigail Pye (age 18) dances the role of the lead sylph (a supernatural creature) with leading company dancer Mauricio Vergara as the poet.

Les Sylphides is often referred to as a “romantic reverie.” The ballet consists of a corps de ballet composed entirely of women, 3 female soloists and one male soloist. There is no plot but one can infer that the ballet is the manifestation of the poet’s dream. Based on the original choreography by Michel Fokine, Assistant Artistic Director Chieko Imada has staged a visually beautiful version of this famous ” ballet blanc.” Deep in the night the sylphs dance in a moonlit glade.

Also on the program is the premiere of the children’s ballet Snow White. This new work will feature BT2 company member Aimee Carrick in the title role. Ballet Tucson soloist Connolly Strombeck will portray the Huntsman and Mauricio Vergara is the Prince.

This ballet is loosely based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale and is complete with the evil queen, seven dwarfs, the bluebird of happiness, a magic mirror, and other enchanted forest creatures. New faculty member Michelle Alexander collaborates with Founding Artistic Director Mary Beth Cabana on this original work.

Long-time Ballet Tucson Dancer and choreographer Deanna Doncsecz contributes a contemporary ballet to round out the program.
