COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER FAIR
Monday, February 19, 2018 @ 3:30 pm - 6:00 pm MST
THE SECOND ANNUAL COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER FAIR at The Historic Y, 300 E. University Blvd at N. 5th Ave., President’s Day, Monday February 19th, from 3:30 to 6pm. NOT MY PRESIDENT’S DAY THEATER to follow at 7pm in the Scoundrel and Scamp Theatre, a staged reading of the political play “The Real Machiavelli”, both free.
Fed up with the current state of the world? Want to do something about it? Groups representing social, political, and environmental activism will once again bring their tables full of literature, petitions, and passions to The Historic Y for our second annual Community Volunteer Fair. The first such event was held in 2017 in response to the 2016 elections, with over 65 community organizations participating. This year’s fair may be even bigger, with confirmed participation running the gamut from the Community Food Bank to Tucson’s chapter of the National Organization for Women.
New this year: mini-workshops, 15-20 minutes each (on the hour and half-hour from 3:30 to 5:30) in The Historic Y Conference Room, on the following topics:
– Best Practices in Registering a Voter, the OFA Way
– Letters to Editors – Join Us and Learn How
– Fake News or Real News: How to Tell the Difference
– Using the Arizona Legislature’s Request to Speak Program (RTS)
– Islamophobia and Its Effects on Muslim Children
The festive atmosphere will feature food and drink and music in the lovely lobby and courtyard of the Historic Y, as seasoned activists and new volunteers socialize and mobilize for positive change.
Last year’s Fair ended with a staged reading of a political play, “The Higher Education of Khalid Amir,” and this year’s fair will also end with a staged reading of a new political play, “The Real Machiavelli,” by New York and Tucson playwright Monica Bauer. Bauer is part of the national Bad Hombres and Nasty Women political collective, responsible for performances all over the country as part of their nation-wide “Not My President’s Day” protests. The free play reading begins at 7pm, at the Scoundrel and Scamp Theatre inside The Historic Y.
