John Waters’ “This Filthy World” Tour
Sunday, June 30, 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm MST
John Waters brings his “This Filthy World” lecture to the historic Celebrity Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 30th. Tickets go on sale this Friday, May 10th at celebritytheatre.com. A VIP ticket includes seating in the first two rows, a copy of John Waters’ new book, and front-of-line access for post-show meet & greet and book signing.
John Waters’ “This Filthy World” performance is a rapid-fire one-man spoken word “vaudeville” act that celebrates the film career and joyously appalling taste of the man William Burroughs once called “The Pope of Trash.” Updated and expanded from the original film version, the live performance of “This Filthy World” focuses on Waters’ early negative artistic influences, his fascination with true crime, exploitation films, fashion lunacy, the extremes of the art world, Catholicism, sexual deviancy and a love of reading.
Waters is a man of many monikers: The Prince of Puke, The Duke of Dirt, The Sultan of Sleaze. Anyway you put it, Waters is famed the world over for his trash epics including “Pink Flamingos,” “Female Trouble,” “Desperate Living,” “Polyester,” “Serial Mom,” “Pecker,” “Cecil B. Demented” and “A Dirty Shame.” Two of his more surprisingly commercial films have been adapted for the stage. “Hairspray,” winner of eight Tony Awards and “Cry Baby – The Musical” nominated for four Tony Awards. In the summer of 2007, “Hairspray” reinvented itself cinematically as a big-budget Hollywood movie starring John Travolta that became a smash hit worldwide.
He is the author of nine books: Shock Value, Crackpot, Pink Flamingos and Other Trash, Hairspray, Female Trouble and Multiple Maniacs, Art: A Sex Book (co-written with Bruce Hainley), Role Models, Carsick and Mr. Know-It-All: The Tarnished Wisdom of a Filth Elder, which hits shelves this month! Book sales will be presented by Changing Hands Bookstore the night of the show.
In September 2014, the Film Society of Lincoln Center honored Waters’ 50 years in film making with a 10-day celebration entitled “Fifty Years of John Waters: How Much Can You Take?” In the Fall of 2015, the British Film Institute also honored Waters’ 50-year contribution to cinema with their own program called “The Complete Films of John Waters…Every Goddam One of Them.” Most recently, The French Minister of Culture bestowed the rank of Officer in the Order of Arts and Letters to Mr. Waters.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $30, $40, $65 and $99 VIP (seating in the first 2 rows + book + priority access for post-show meet & greet/book signing). Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. this Friday, May 10th at Celebrity Theatre, 440 N. 32nd St., in Phoenix, or online at www.celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-267-1600.
