José Luis Gomez to Conduct TSO and Tucson Girls Chorus
April 18, 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm MST
The Tucson Symphony Orchestra will perform a free concert Thursday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Tucson Music Hall to honor donors and welcome the community. Music Director José Luis Gomez will conduct the TSO and the Tucson Girls Chorus Advanced Choir, Marcela Molina, conductor. The program will feature familiar music including the Blue Danube Waltz, “Greensleeves” and “Pomp and Circumstance March.” Everyone is invited to attend, come as you are and no ticket is required.
The program will also feature “Landfall,” by TSO Young Composers Project student Rory Bricca. The 14-year old University High freshman has played piano for 10 years and French horn for five. This is his second year in the Young Composers Project. He says “Landfall” describes the growing intensity of a hurricane as it approaches, makes landfall, and finally creates a rainbow.
“Donors support our concert work on the stage and throughout the region, foster our future generation of artists and make our work possible for the entire community,” commented Maestro Gomez. “With this concert, we welcome the entire community to experience great music for free.”
This is the first time the Tucson Girls Chorus (TGC) has sung with the TSO. Founded in 1985, the TGC is recognized as an outstanding choral education program working with girls from kindergarten through high school. Benefiting over 200 girls throughout ten different choruses, the TGC provides vocal instruction, music theory and musicianship, social interaction, performance opportunities, leadership skills and the chance to serve as ambassadors of the Southwest and the US, across the state, nationally and internationally. The two upper choirs tour nationally and internationally, and have produced CDs. Dr. Molina has been affiliated with the Tucson Girls Chorus since 2006, first serving as Artistic Director and taking the helm as Executive Director in 2011. Born in Bogotá, Colombia Dr. Molina holds a degree in Theory and Composition from Westminster Choir College and a doctorate in Choral Conducting from the University of Arizona.
The TSO thanks John and Adrienne Utley for their special gift to help make this concert possible. Additional support is from Rio Nuevo.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 18 at Tucson Music Hall. Seating is general admission, no tickets required.
Programming and artists are subject to change.
