Mondays: Summer Chorus
Monday, June 5, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - Friday, July 28, 2017 @ 8:30 pm MST
Hungry for some summertime fun? Join the Summer Chorus which begins rehearsing a delectable menu of silly songs about food on June 5, 2017. The chorus is recruiting both men and women to whet their appetite for tasty parody songs about food – including the “Jalapeno Chorus,” “Food, Glorious Food” from the musical Oliver, “Lollipop,” “Pizza, Pasta,” and “Chocolate!”
Music Director Terrie Ashbaugh – who also happens to be a gourmet cook – said the focus on food is just plain fun. The silly program also has a serious intent – “we’ll be soliciting recipes from our audience for a future cookbook,” she said. Ashbaugh started the Summer Chorus in Tucson eight years ago. She is business manager and director of worship at Ascension Lutheran Church and School, as well as the longtime director of the Southern Arizona Women’s Chorus.
The Summer Chorus generally numbers about 45 male and female vocalists. The talent comes from members of choruses in greater Tucson– including Desert Tones, Desert Voices, Sons of Orpheus, Southern Arizona Women’s Chorus, Tucson Masterworks Chorale, the University of Arizona Faculty/Staff Choir, plus Ascension Lutheran Church, Christ the King Episcopal Church, St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and others.
Rehearsals will be held on Monday evenings from 7 to 8:30 p.m. from June 5 through July 24 at Ascension Lutheran Church, 1220 W. Magee. The cost is $55 per person. The concluding performance will be at the church on July 28 at 7 p.m. All voice parts are needed and there is no audition required. “The Summer Chorus is a great asset to the Southern Arizona community,” said Linda Kayden, a member of Masterworks Chorale. “Most of this region’s many choral groups do not rehearse or perform during the summer. This provides a place for community members to keep their voices active in the summer, as well as to meet people from other groups, form bonds and share resources. It’s also a lot of fun for the audience.”
The Summer Concert is sponsored by the Arizona Choral Arts Association.
