Oakland Zoo’s Conservation Speaker Series: Action for Giraffes
Sunday, October 11, 6:30pm – 9:00pm
This evening’s talk is presented by Dr. Julian Fennessy, Conservation Scientist and Executive Director of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. His experience in the field of giraffe conservation is something few others can boast, from individual field projects, supervision of students, population and country-wide assessments, to expert advisor on (sub) species conservation strategies. Julian has conducted numerous conservation expeditions across the continent, including in Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Niger, Uganda and Zambia. Julian holds a PhD in Biological Science from the University of Sydney, Australia based on his work in Namibia – the ecology of the desert-dwelling giraffe in Namibia’s northwest. His diverse skill base helps him tell a captivating story about giraffes and why they need help. Cost is $12.00- $20.00 sliding scale. Zoovie Night at Oakland Zoo October 16: 6:30pm – 9:30pm
Put on your jammies and enjoy an evening of Zoovie magic with the whole family. Bring your pillows, blankets, and chairs and snuggle up in our auditorium for “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.” Meet some of our nocturnal Education animals brought to you by Roosevelt, Oakland Zoo’s costumed alligator mascot. Hot chocolate (with marshmallows, of course) and popcorn will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own treats and traditional family movie fare. Let the show begin! $7 per adult and $7 per child to cover the costs of the Animal close-up program and snacks. If your group has 4 or more people, the price is $6 per adult and $6 per child. Volunteer Day: Arroyo Viejo Habitat Restoration Creek Crew
October 17: 9:00am – 12:00pm
The Arroyo Viejo Creek Project is looking for community groups, families and individuals to help remove invasive species as well as sponsors for trail upkeep and outdoor classroom experiences. Sponsor the creek project by sending your team of volunteers on a Creek Crew Work Day, or contribute to our fund to keep the creek free of invasive species and our outdoor classrooms full of young learners. Teacher Appreciation Day

Oakland Zoo is hosting their very 1st Teacher Appreciation Day! Teachers and their immediate family will receive FREE admission. There will be scheduled events throughout the day for teachers to learn about education programs offered by Oakland Zoo. Teachers are also eligible to get a 20% discount on zoo membership. Zoo visitors are encouraged to bring in school supplies, which will be distributed to the teachers attending. Each individual who brings school supplies will receive one FREE ride ticket! Volunteer Day: Arroyo Viejo Habitat Restoration Creek Crew
Saturday, October 17: 9:00am-12:00pm
Come to the Arroyo Viejo Creek and experience the local habitat, while helping it thrive. Grab your gardening gloves and help clean up the creek. We will work in rain or shine, so come prepared! Wear shoes that can get dirty. Shoes must be close-toed. Don’t forget your water and snacks. Gloves and tools will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. One adult chaperone is required for every 4 youth volunteers, 13 years of age and younger as well as one adult chaperone for every 8 youth volunteers between 14 – 18 years of age. ZooKids: Some Like it Wet

Does your little one love animals? ZooKids classes are a great way for children age 4-5 to have a fun and educational adventure at the zoo. Program Description: What is wet, dark, and green all over? The Rainforest, that’s what! Explore the many layers of the Rainforest. Learn about the amazing diversity of the animals and plants that call them home and understand how you can help protect them. ZooKids classes are held on Saturdays from 9:30am – 12:00pm. Each ZooKids class is offered twice per month to accommodate more participants. Each month has a different theme and classes are designed so that children can come to multiple classes without repeating the same activities. Pre-registration is required. Program fee is $26.00. Family Sundown SPOOKfari – NEW OVERNIGHT EVENT

Grab your tent, bring your family, and get ready for an eerie overnight experience. Take a Trick-or-treat night tour through the Children’s Zoo. Make Jack-o-Lantern enrichment treats for the animals, and meet live, creepy, crawly animals up close! Before bedtime listen to the scary stories told by storyteller Michael Katz with some Ghost S’mores to finish the night. Wake-up in the morning (if you dared to fall asleep) to the sounds of animals and a hot breakfast. Watch the animals enjoy the pumpkins you worked on and stay the rest of the day for our Boo at the Zoo festivities! Program fee is $75.00 per member, $85.00 per non-member. Boo at the Zoo
Saturday, October 24 and Sunday October 25: 10:00am – 3:00pm
Visit the Oakland Zoo for our annual Halloween event, Boo at the Zoo! Children can stroll the Zoo in costume and collect yummy treats. Highlights also include the Monster Mash Dance Party, a scavenger hunt, and spooktific entertainment . Plus, children have the opportunity to get their face painted, make treats for the animals, and see how the animals at the Oakland Zoo celebrate Halloween.
