CALL FOR POETS & SPOKEN WORD ARTISTS
Calling all POETS and SPOKEN WORD ARTISTS. The Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance is sending a call out to Southern Arizona based poets and spoken word artists to create an original poem that addresses the importance of Community, Culture, and Art during a time of crisis and social distancing. We believe that our community will come together in powerful ways over the coming years as we continue to adapt and respond to the many challenges the future will provide us all. We also believe that arts and culture provide foundational abilities to help our community find solutions and inspiration. It is for this reason that SAACA is looking to develop several key pieces of new digital content for our community to engage in.
The winning poem/spoken word piece will be filmed in partnership with the artists as a performance by the poet, or a voice actor, in a short video produced by SAACA. The resulting video will be aired on local television networks and published on social media and online channels.
Deadline to apply: Monday, May 11

THE ARTS CONNECT TEAMS ACROSS THE GLOBE FOR ROCHE WITH HOME|ZUHAUSE
Roche Connects Teams Across the Globe During COVID-19 Through Virtual Photographic Exhibition
For many years, Roche Tissue Diagnostics (RTD) has made a tremendous investment in workplace creativity through an annual art exhibition showcasing the work of talented employees, contractors and their families. This show would typically grace the walls of the Oro Valley campus as the featured summer exhibition.
Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance (SAACA) and RTD worked together to move up the summer show to spring and include colleagues and their families from the larger Roche Molecular Solutions. This organization brings together the diagnostic power of molecular, tissue and sequencing technologies, with sites in Arizona, California and New Jersey, as well as Germany, Switzerland and South Africa.
The exhibition is titled Home|Zuhause. With the majority of departments working remotely, it seemed appropriate to ask Roche colleagues to submit photographic images that exemplify home to them. For many of the artists, the concept of home has taken on new meaning during the global pandemic. The result is Home|Zuhause, which supports the larger organization’s connectedness through the sharing of deeply personal imagery.
SAACA is proud to continue our partnership with Roche Tissue Diagnostics, and supporting innovative arts programming year round.
SAACA TO ANNOUNCE PHASED REOPENING PLAN FOR CATALYST COLLABORATIVE ARTS & MAKER SPACE, BEGINNING MAY 20
On Wednesday, May 20, 2020, SAACA will begin a Phased Reopening Strategy of our CATALYST Arts & Maker Space in Tucson Mall including a limited capacity operation plan within reduced operating hours based off the current health recommendations provided to our organization.
We are committed to providing a safe and secure facility for all visitors. At a time when the community needs opportunities to begin to connect and gather once again, we know that the CATALYST Arts & Maker Space will be a great place to do just that, both digitally and in small group settings.
Although the arts have been the very thing that have kept us all connected during the COVID-19 outbreak, it is also an industry that has been decimated and served a heavy blow during this time. Most individual artists are self-employed and rely on monetary streams of revenue that come directly from selling, promoting and presenting their work. SAACA is committed to providing innovative solutions for the future, and hope to begin working directly with artists, makers and creatives to find these creative solutions to rebound and inspiration for the future.
ARTS CARE PACKAGES FOR SENIORS
SAACA Provides Arts Care Packages to 500+ Residents and Patients at Local Assisted Living and Critical Care Service Centers in Southern Arizona
Over 50 artists, donors, individuals, and organizations around Tucson contributed to SAACA’s Arts Care Packages- providing residents at Assisted Living Homes and patients at the Southern Arizona Veterans Administration with music, and interactive arts experiences to enjoy from the comfort of their own rooms.
SAACA CANCELS POSTPONED SPRING FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS IN ORO VALLEY
Considering recent developments in Arizona and the Governor’s proclamation of extending the Stay at Home Order until May 15th, and with the extension lasting indefinitely through the end of May for large gatherings of 10 or more in outdoor venues, it is with deep regret that SAACA must cancel the event.
SAACA was initially hopeful that it would be possible to hold the Oro Valley Spring Festival of the Arts when rescheduled to take place May 16 & 17, 2020 at the Oro Valley Marketplace.
SAACA is committed to the safety of all who attend events and festivals and are taking the appropriate measures to help ensure that participants will experience a safe and healthy environment in the present, and into the future. We are optimistic for the future and look forward to planning a robust season of community festivals through the end of 2020.
MURAL ARTISTS DESCEND UPON SAHUARITA
The Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance, in collaboration with the Town of Sahuarita Parks and Recreation Department, is bringing a variety of new public art installations to the Town of Sahuarita, AZ. The 2020 Sahuarita Public Art Projects feature five artists who will transform designated electrical cabinets, roll-up storage doors, and a seat wall in town parks into distinctive works of art.
The new murals celebrate themes of Sahuarita culture, economy, and landscape. Five southern Arizona artists – Alexandra Jimenez, Alonso Delgadillo, Isaac Caruso, Ignacio Garcia, and Alejandra Trujillo – were chosen from a competitive field of applicants to design and implement the murals. This collaborative project seeks to bring a new sense of beauty and pride to the community. Watch the muralists in action throughout the first two weeks of May!
SUPPORT LOCAL ARTISTS & CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS BY TUNING IN ONLINE
Southern Arizona is a place of great artistic diversity and creativity. During this time of social distancing, thousands of artists, creatives, makers, teachers, are making the switch to connect with their audiences online. We want to share and amplify all the great digital content that is being streamed and created.
The Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance has compiled a list of local online streaming and digital content that is being produced here in our community. During this time of distancing, below are some inspiring ways to get involved in creative education programming, live music, business training online, cultural dance experiences and art classes that are all being offered online.
