Shen Wei in Black, White & Gray Opens to the public Friday, October 9
Shen Wei Dance Arts entertainment at Centennial Hall on Sunday, November 22, at 7:00 PM
Tucson is very fortunate to simultaneously host an art exhibition of paintings, as well as a dance performance by internationally-renowned choreographer/artist, Shen Wei. Shen Wei in Black, White & Gray, large-scale paintings by Shen Wei, opens Friday, October 9, 2015, at the Tucson Museum of Art (TMA) in historic downtown Tucson. Shen Wei’s dance troupe, Shen Wei Dance Arts, will perform at Centennial Hall on Sunday, November 22, at 7:00 PM, presented by UA Presents. Shen Wei’s practice as a visual and performing artist is daring, elegant, and sophisticated. His work in both mediums displays a hybrid of styles and aesthetic traditions that places it firmly within an international perspective expressed in profoundly new ways. “We are excited to present Shen Wei’s paintings at the Tucson Museum of Art,” said TMA Chief Curator and Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Dr. Julie Sasse. “His work has a timeless quality that blends both his background in traditional Chinese visual and performing arts, and influences from Western art including Cézanne, Degas, Lucien Freud, and the avant-garde art forms of 1980s Chinese New Wave. He is an action painter in the truest sense.”
“Shen Wei is internationally renowned for choreographing the 2008 Beijing Olympics,” said Lendre Kearns, Director of Operations and Strategic Marketing. “He is a young and already important choreographer who is expanding dance as a medium, and for this reason his work is very much in demand by audiences worldwide.” Shen Wei in Black, White & Gray will remain on view at TMA until December 6, 2015.
