Smokey Bear is celebrating his 75th birthday this month!
Friday, August 9, 2019
The USDA Forest Service authorized the creation of Smokey Bear on August 9, 1944, which is now celebrated as Smokey’s birthday! Artist Albert Staehle created the first Smokey Bear poster in October of that year, and from then on, Smokey was known as America’s beloved advocate for wildfire prevention.
Smokey and his slogans have appeared on numerous posters and stamps and in dozens of radio commercials and public service announcements. Though the campaign has changed over the years, Smokey Bear remains a national icon: a nostalgic reminder of fire prevention lessons learned in childhood, a symbol of the important relationship between humans and wildlife, and a constant reminder that “only YOU can prevent wildfires.”
Celebrate Smokey’s 75th birthday by learning more about wildfire prevention, sharing Smokey’s message, and creating a new generation of advocates!
