The Antiquities Act of 1906
Saturday, October 28, 2017 @ 12:00 pm MST
On Saturday, October 28 at 12 PM & 2 PM George and Donna Hartz present a talk about The Antiquities Act of 1906, viewed by many as the most important piece of conservation and preservation legislation in US history. Sixteen US presidents have designated 177 new national monuments under the Act, including nearly every site served by WNPA. However, it has also been criticized for blocking mining, lumbering, and grazing on federal lands, and for ignoring the views of local residents and businesses. This presentation will explore the impetuses behind the passage of the Act, the ways it has been used by our presidents, the major controversies surrounding the Act, and the possible fates of many monuments. Please call 520-622-6014 during business hours to request a reservation.
