Based on the true story of Tomás Rivera and the book by Pat Mora, Childsplay brings back this favorite play with music – celebrating reading, imagination and creativity. Tomás loves stories and Papa Grande tells them to him todas las noches! One day while his family is in Iowa picking crops, Tomás meets the Library Lady and nothing is ever the same again. Soon his imagination takes off as he reads book after book, discovering a world filled with dinosaurs, tigers, and explorers!
Tomás and his family are migrant workers who travel from state to state, helping farmers harvest their crops and its not easy to a new place all the time. But once he sees the library, he meets a surprising new friend who gently coaxes him inside. Throughout the hot days thereafter, the Library Lady offers Tomás cool drinks of water and adventurous escapes into books; on slow days he teaches her Spanish until it’s time to return home to Texas: ‘I have a sad word to teach you today. The word is adios. It means good-bye.’ . . .
While young people and future librarians will find this an inspiring tale, the end note gives it a real kick: the story is based on an actual migrant worker [Tomás Rivera] who became chancellor of a university — where the library now bears his name.
Founded in 1977, Childsplay is a nationally and internationally respected professional theatre company whose chosen audience is children. Childsplay believes that young people deserve to experience challenging, thought-provoking theatre of the highest artistic quality.
Their mission is “To create theatre so strikingly original in form, content or both that it instills in young people an enduring awe, love and respect for the medium, thus preserving imagination and wonder, those hallmarks of childhood that are the keys to the future.”
A respect for children’s intelligence and creativity drives Childsplay to produce new and innovative works by theatre’s finest artists.
