True Concord Voices & Orchestra – Bach St. Matthew Passion

Friday, February 22, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - Sunday, February 24, 2019 @ 3:00 pm MST

True Concord Voices & Orchestra will perform the magnificent Bach St. Matthew Passion February 22-24th in Tucson and Green Valley. The sacred oratorio was written by Johann Sebastian Bach for solo voices, choir and orchestra in 1727 and revised again between 1743 and 1746. The piece tells the story of Christ’s final sufferings through text from the Book of Matthew, German poetry and chorales.

Widely regarded as one of the great masterpieces of classical sacred music, it is believed it was first performed in April of 1727 at St Thomas Church in Leipzig, Germany. Little is known with certainty about the creation process of the St Matthew Passion. The available information derives from early manuscripts, contemporary publications of the libretto, and circumstantial data, for instance in documents archived by the Town Council of Leipzig.

Feature soloists for the performance will be Tucson Boys Chorus, tenor Brian Giebler and baritone vocalist David Farwig. Music Director Eric Holtan has gathered together the powerful voices of ten soloists, multiple choirs and two orchestras “to perform one of the most ambitious musical compositions of all time by the greatest musical genius of all time. Bach demonstrates his strength as a dramatic composer in the St. Matthew Passion. Leonard Bernstein said it best -“There is nothing like it in all music.”

The Passion begins with an immense wave of sound – an opening chorus by double choir with children’s chorus (Boys Chorus) soaring over the top – building with intensity and sweeping the listener into the drama. Each solo voice, choir and orchestra plays a role. Described as a “majestic cathedral of music,” this work is at once intimate and monumental. A work so devastating in its power that people of all beliefs find meaning in it – one reason why this work has held its emotional impact from 1727 to present day.

Performances will take place as follows:

Friday, February 22, 7 pm ~ Valley Presbyterian Church, Green Valley
Saturday, February 23, 7:30pm ~ Catalina Foothills High School
Sunday, February 24, 3:00pm ~ Catalina United Methodist Church
Tickets for all performances are $40 premium seating, $25 general admission and can be purchased at trueconcord.org
