UA Poetry Center Summer Events

Saturday, June 1, 2019 @ 8:00 am - Saturday, November 23, 2019 @ 5:00 pm MST

Events take place at the Poetry Center, 1508 E. Helen St, Tucson, AZ, 85721, unless otherwise noted.

CCP Exhibit – A Portrait of Poetry – June 1 through November 23 / The Center for Creative Photography and the Poetry Center at the University of Arizona are delighted to collaborate to exhibit a captivating project by B.A. Van Sise in a celebration of the bicentennial of Walt Whitman’s birth. Van Sise is a New York–based photographer with a lifelong love of poetry and a family lineage that traces back to seminal American poet Walt Whitman. Van Sise has undertaken an expansive and inventive poetry portraiture project. Beginning in 2015, he embarked on a quest to make portraits of American poets that reflect the diversity and vitality of today’s poetry scene. This exhibit is on display at the Center for Creative Photography (1030 N. Olive Rd, Tucson, AZ).

Exhibit – Another Person’s Magic: Collaborative Books – June 4 through August 10 / This exhibit features works composed collaboratively. Some collaborations presented here are partnerships between two poets; others are the results of joint efforts between writers, visual artists, and bookmakers. All, however, are the product of dedicated and intentional teamwork between accomplished artists, each inviting what poet Jane Miller calls “another person’s magic” into their creative practices, each transforming their individual voices in the process.

Free Time: Building a Community of Mentors for Incarcerated Writers – August 24, Saturday at 11:00 AM / One Saturday every month, Joe Watson—a local writer, activist and former Arizona Department of Corrections prisoner—will educate workshop participants on life in Arizona’s jails and prisons; lead an exploration of creative writing on issues of mass incarceration and mass criminalization; and teach community members how to engage and critique the works of incarcerated writers through correspondence.
