PCC students win 11 journalism awards

The "Aztec Press," Pima Community College's student newspaper, received 11 awards, including a "General Excellence for Tabloid" award in the 2002 contest sponsored by the Journalism Association of Community Colleges.

The newspaper took second place for front page layout and honorable mention tor headlines. Several students also received awards for their work on the paper. Eric Sagara received second place for his informational graphics and inside page design, and Romano Cedillos reccived second place for his opinion story.

Other honorable mentions were awarded to Sagara for editorial, Oliver John for a critical review, Alejandro Mendoza for editorial cartoon and Lawrence Johnson for two categories of line art.

The students submitted their best published works to one of more than 24 categories in the contest in Sacramento, Calif.

"The quality of the 'Aztec Press' is consistently improving," said Robert Zucker, the newspaper advisor. "The students are always proving themselves by producing high quality publications and winning awards."
