The competitors venture to the Brazilian jungle on a quest to wrestle with Kalapalo warriors at the Festival of Death.  Wrestlers compete for their village’s honor.  But first they have to prove themselves worthy to compete —an ordeal that involves being scored with razor-sharp piranha teeth.  Our athletes are trained to take part, but only a select few can secure a place on the village team.

Episode 2: Zulu Stick Fighting

Premieres October 4 at 10 PM ET/PT

In South Africa, the six men live in the traditional village of Nqekwane and take on the Zulus in the deadly sport of stick fighting, an event where bloodshed and death are never far away.  The athletes have to go through initiation ceremonies and take magic potions to find the skill and courage to fight at a Zulu royal wedding.

Episode 3: Tarahumara Endurance Race

Premieres October 11 at 9 PM ET/PT

The competitors are put to the test, trekking high into the Copper Canyon region of northwest Mexico to run a marathon-length race against Tarahumara Indians, some of the greatest natural endurance runners in the world.  And if running at high altitude weren’t tough enough, they discover that to compete they also have to wear local sandals and learn to kick a small wooden ball over a snake-infested canyon course.

Episode 4: Sumi Kick Fighting

Premieres October 18 at 9 PM ET/PT

The competitors take on the Sumi, a tribe of former headhunters in Nagaland—a remote area of northeast India.  Their goal is to become Aki Kiti fighters, a vicious martial art where the soles of the feet are the only weapons…and the only defense.  The athletes prove themselves worthy adversaries for the locals in an intervillage competition.

Episode 5: Mongolian Wrestling

Premieres October 25 at 9 PM ET/PT

The athletes stay in a small community of nomads in the far west of Mongolia.  They are to take part in a local Nadaam, the greatest of all Mongolian sporting and cultural events.  The men are put to the test, living as Mongolian nomads, where relentless training for a professional wrestling tournament is broken only by some of the unpleasant tasks involved in managing the local herd of goats.

Episode 6: Trobriand Cricket

Premieres November 1 at 9 PM ET/PT

The athletes land on the island of Kiriwina during the heart of the Mila Mala, the local harvest festival.  As part of the festival they have been invited to play in a huge tribal “cricket” match between two rival villages.  The English game of cricket was brought to the island by missionaries, but the islanders now play very much by their own rules.  Living with Pacific Islanders at festival time to take part in a game of cricket doesn’t sound so bad.  But the competitors soon discover that this isn’t cricket as we know it, but instead a game of taunts, intimidation, magic…and war.

Episode 7: Senegalese Wrestling

Premieres November 8 at 9 PM ET/PT

The athletes travel to Senegal to take on the locals at their national sport—Senegalese wrestling.  The six men are thrown into a wrestling boot camp in a Senegalese village, where their aim is to compete with the locals at their national sport.  Only two athletes are permitted to take part in open competition with neighboring villages.  But first they have to avoid serious injury—something easier said than done.

Episode 8: Sepik Canoe Racing

Premieres November 15 at 9 PM ET/PT

Living with the Sepik, a jungle tribe of Papua New Guinea, the men compete in the biggest canoe race of the year.  But to succeed, they also have to learn to sleep in snake-ridden shelters and survive crocodile-infested waters.

Episode 9: Kraho Log Running

Premieres November 29 at 9 PM ET/PT

The athletes travel to central Brazil to take part in a particularly unusual sport—log racing.  It’s spring, and the granddaughter of the chief of the Kraho village is going to come of age in a ceremony called the Witi.  As part of the ceremony, two teams of runners (representing the wet and dry seasons) compete to carry a log from outside the village to its sacred center.  The athletes struggle with the heavy log and with the drinks that “cleanse” them internally.

Episode 10: Andean Ice Race

Premieres December 6 at 9 PM ET/PT

The competitors journey to one of the world’s highest communities—the village of Paqchanta, high in the Andes.  Their goal: to take part in the Qoyllur Rit’i festival, and in particular the local ice race—to cut a block of ice from a glacier at over 17,000 feet and then run with it down the mountain.  To take part, the athletes have to suffer altitude sickness, whipping and finally learning to become ukukus —the special half-man, half-bear officiators who are the only ones allowed to cut the sacred glacier.

Episode 11: Java Martial Arts

Premieres December 13 at 9 PM ET/PT

The men find themselves in the Indonesian village of Cikaramat in West Java, a rural area surrounded by rice paddies.  Here they learn the local sport—a martial art called Pencak Silat.  In its raw form it’s a type of combat that can kill.  To learn the sport, they have to trust entirely in a guru who trains them in the many complex moves of the art and schools them in the spiritual and mental strength they need to succeed.  They have darts blown into their torsos and have to stand alone in a river through the night in tests of endurance.

Episode 12: Vanuatu Canoe Race

Premieres December 20 at 9 PM ET/PT

The athletes travel to the South Pacific to live on the tiny island of Wala in Vanuatu and live with the Small Nambas, who subsist as fishermen.  It looks like paradise, but they face their toughest endurance task—a seaborne canoe race between islands, battling trade winds, storms, high waves and the fear of sharks.  The athletes live and train with the locals and take part in a special “grade taking” ceremony, where the local chief gains increased status, before taking part in the race.
