Located Northwest of Tucson, Arizona, Marana is home to 20,333 people, according to the U.S. Census of June 2003.
That's a large increase from only 13,556 people who lived in the area in April 2000. Student enrollment during the 2006-07 school year exceeded 13,000, with a graduating class of 769 students.
The Town of Marana incorporated in 1977. Marana was named for the Spanish word maraña ('thicket') by 19th century railroad workers who had to clear a line through the area.

Marana hosted the PGA Tour's WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in February 2007. The event included 64 of the world's best professional golfers. Henrik Stenson won the inaugural event. The tournament will remain in Marana through at least 2010.
