Gem Show traffic limits parking options downtown

With all the improvements this past year, there will still be limited parking available in the Downtown Tucson area.

The Downtown Tucson now has 14,000 parking spaces, 1,000 parking meters and eight parking garages available to the public. During the Gem Show, the demand for those spaces will fill up quickly early in the morning.

Special Gem Show parking is available at 22nd St. and I-10 frontage road (East side), and Congress St. and I-10 frontage road (West side) as well as at the JOGS show at Tucson Expo Center on East Irvington Road.

New Downtown Garage

A new downtown parking garage opened in September at Congress Street and Toole Avenue on the far east side of Downtown.

The new, 378 space, parking garage is the first phase of the Centro Project on Congress Street. The second phase, scheduled to be completed in 2013, includes 20,000 square feet of retail, office and residential ontop of the parking structure.

Parking areas that are convenient to downtown and frontage road shows:

  • 22nd Street (northeast corner of I-10 & 22nd)
  • Congress (Congress west of the river)

Parking lots are open daily 8am-8pm. The daily fee for most lots is $5.

Additional downtown parking is available at these parking lots:

  • Pennington Street Garage  110 E. Pennington St. at Scott Ave.
  • City & State Garage  498 W. Congress, 1 block east of I-10

Five of the Tucson Downtown parking garages have hourly parking. Those charges free for the first hour and increase to $1 per hour after that. Parking charges will not exceed $8 for the day. The remaining six parking garages and lots offer monthly parking rates that start at $25 per month.

The 750-space Pennington Street Garage is now open for business at the corner of Pennington Street and Sixth Avenue. The garage is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to enter and exit quickly, and a solar lighting system to stay lit at night. Metered street parking on most Downtown streets. A recent re-striping project created 150 additional parking spaces along Congress Street and Broadway Boulevard.

The Pennington Street Garage, 100 E. Pennington, is offering discount garage parking att he garage for $2 for 2 hours; $3 for up to 5 hours; $4 for up to 8 hours and $5 for 12 hours. There is also a discounted rate of $15 a day. The discount prices will return to the regular garage rates after the construction of the Fourth Avenue Underpass is completed.
