Closing out an exceptional season of world class entertainment, Ballet Tucson presents Ballet in Bloom, a dazzling finale of graceful choreography and vibrant artistry.
The performance opens with George Balanchine’s La Source, once described as “Pink Champagne”, features both brilliant ensemble work and virtuosic pas de deuxs. Premiering at the Pacific Northwest Ballet in 2019 with Ballet Tucson’s own artistic director Margaret Mullin as part of the original cast, Bacchus is Ballet Tucson’s first work by famed choreographer Matthew Neenan, who the New York Times has called “one of America’s best dance poets”.
Set to the spiritied music of Oliver Davis, Bacchus is a lively romp that exemplifies the Roman god of Wine himself. Audience favorite Steps Forward creation Mind Over Manner by Ballet Tucson dancer Brook Amundrud makes a triumphant return. Rounding out the program, Ballet Tucson celebrates the legacy of the late American choreographer Ron Cunningham with the Ballet Tucson premiere of his critically acclaimed Bolero.
Intriguing, provocative, and bold, his striking ballet set to Maurice Ravel’s classic score has long been a Sacramento Ballet audience favorite and promises to offer a thrilling conclusion to Ballet Tucson’s 2025/26 season.
In reflecting the season, Artistic Director Maggie Mullin said “This has been a truly inspiring season and Ballet in Bloom is the perfect finale. This show is a celebration of American ballet at its finest and a testament to the excellence of our artists, demonstrating that Ballet Tucson is gaining national attention and prestige. It’s also an honor to uphold the legacy of one of America’s great choreographers, Ron Cunningham, after his recent passing by presenting one of his most iconic works, Bolero. This is a special performance that will leave our audience with a new love for the multifaceted art of ballet”.
Ballet in Bloom will take place in the Proscenium Theatre, Pima Community College Center for the Arts on Friday, April 17 at 7pm, Saturday, April 18 at 2pm and 7pm and on Sunday, April 19 at 2pm. All tickets for this performance can be purchased at https://collections.humanitix.com/ballet-in-bloom and will be distributed digitally and can be scanned or printed out for admission.
