First Sunday Music

This Sunday, the last Sunday in the Epiphany season, the Choir of Saint Philip’s will sing the entire Gloria section from J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor. Last year, the choir mounted a performance of the Symbolum Nicenum section of the mass, and we are excited to bring another full division of this work to our morning Eucharist. All nine movements of the Gloria will be inserted into the 10:00 am service, bringing Bach’s magisterial work into the context of the mass itself, a situation that Bach never experienced.

From the pathos and introspection of the Qui tollis, to the effervescent joy of Cum Sancto Spiritu, to gallant arias like Domine Deus, this mass truly catalogs Bach’s finest material into one enormous work. We feel delighted and privileged to bring this music to a real service of worship.
