The lives of Hannah and Wylie Box, two of the earliest minority business owners in Tucson, spanned several states and Mexico. They operated a boarding home in downtown Tucson in the late 19th century, but they also ran a gambling operation, were accused of attempted murder, committed bigamy, and one experienced a tragic death that captured the headlines.
Their daughter, Annie Box Neal, eventually opened the Mountain View Hotel here in Oracle, AZ. It was as grandiose as anything “back East” and became a destination for the wealthy.
How did Annie Neal and her husband, William, both mixed race with African American and Native American heritages, come to create such a grand hotel before the turn of the twentieth century?
Some of the answers lie with Annie Neal’s parents, Hannah and Wylie Box. Theirs is truly a story of survival. We promise a riveting and dramatic story with newly uncovered information. Come join us for this presentation. Friday, April 21 at 6:00PM at the Acadia Ranch Museum. Refreshments will be served. There is no charge for the event but donations are always welcome. 520-896-9609
