Pima County Teen Court, a program of YWCA Southern Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, was selected as 1 of 75 communities in America by the Global Youth Justice Department to lead the 2nd Year of a National 9/11 Day Remembrance Project called the “9/11 Flag of Honor Across America Memorials Day”. This year it is dedicated to victims who lives were lost on and after 9/11 due to illness or injury resulting from 9/11/2001. Each of their names will be read by our Teen Court members. Please see event details below.

Date: Sunday, September 11, 2022
Time: 2:00pm-3:00pm
Location: Tucson Eastside City Hall, Ward 2, 7575 E. Speedway, Tucson, Arizona 85710

Sunday, September 11, 2022, Tucson, Arizona – 75 communities across America are joining together to remember the 2,983 women, men, and children who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 (2,977) and in the World Trade Center bombing on February 26, 1993 (6) and those whose lives were lost after 9/11/2001 due to illness and injury resulting from the events of 9/11.

Each of the 75 inaugural communities will remember 65 individuals, 50 of whom died on 9/11 and 15 of whom died after the events of 9/11. Each will be honored by:

• Reading their name

• Sharing where they are remembered in the North Pool or South Pool at the 9/11 Memorial in New York City, the Pentagon, Pennsylvania, and those who died from illness or injuries after 9/11

• Reading the panel number where their name is in bronze at the 9/11 Memorial,

• Reading a short bio for each listed on the website of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

On this day, each of the (75) communities will raise the official 9/11 Flag of Honor, including the names of all 2,983 victims who lost their lives on these tragic days, in addition to those whose lives were lost due to illness or injury after 9/11/2001. In 2021, each of these 9/11 Flags visited the 9/11 Memorial and Museum on the ground where the Twin Towers once stood. This year YWCA Southern Arizona’s Pima County Teen Court program is honored to be selected as one of the 75 sites that will take part in this historical day of remembrance. YWCA is honored to have an Americorp staff member participate with Pima County Teen Court’s teen volunteers.

We will honor the 5-foot 9/11 Flag which has traveled to the Flight 93 Memorial in Pennsylvania where passengers landed the plane so that it could not be weaponized.  Two years ago, this same flag was in NYC at the Twin Towers. It visited the Flight 93 Memorial in 2021, and the Pentagon Memorial this year. Teen Court youth volunteers have put a program together to honor and read the 65 names of those who lost their lives, and will feature a guest speaker.

The 1st Annual 9/11 Flag of Honor Across America Memorials Day was held by 60 communities last year on Saturday, September 11, 2021. The 60 communities included Pima County Teen Court, and was led by Global Youth Justice, Inc., and sponsored and funded by the Federal Agency AmeriCorps National Day of Service, and Global Youth Justice, Inc. This event is one of only two new federally sponsored National 9/11 Day Projects by the federal agency AmeriCorps and the largest nationally-coordinated 9/11 Day Project since September 11, 2001. It will involve both adults and youth who were not yet born on September 11, 2001. We are very honored to be hosted in Tucson by Councilman Paul Cunningham at his Ward in City Hall.

The 75 communities participating in this special 9/11 Day Project across America have been selected to represent a wide range of agencies and organizations, including the Global Youth Justice Network of 1800+ youth-led Youth/Peer Court and Peer Jury Diversion Programs as well as Fire Departments, Police Departments, Nonprofits, Courts, Schools, Senior Centers, Youth Bureaus, United Ways, Army JROTC Programs, Community Centers, Service Organizations, and Red, White and Blue Chapters.
