The Dream Team, which worked five years to bring Arizona’s only fully operational stamp mill to life at Cave Creek Museum, is busy gathering quartz and other local rocks for the Golden Reef Stamp Mill and Tramway at the Arizona Gold Mining Experience (AZGME).
The team visited the stamp mill’s original site atop Continental Mountain, which is approximately five miles from the museum, to gather hard rock ore for the stamp mill. The stamp mill’s 10, 1,000-lb. stamps slam down in synchronized motion to pound the rock into fine gravel. The giant stamp mill also is connected to a working tramway and ore carts that carry the ore to be pulverized to the stamp mill. The stamp mill will roar to life on Saturday, October 14, 2023 from 9-11:15 AM. Admission is $15 for adults and children under 12 are free. Reservations are required.
The 53-year-old museum’s mission is to preserve the artifacts of the prehistory, history, culture and legacy of the Cave Creek Mining District and the Cave Creek/Carefree foothills area through education, research and interpretive exhibits. Cave Creek Museum is located at 6140 E. Skyline Drive in Cave Creek, Ariz. Open October through May. The museum can be reached at 480.488.2764 or cavecreekmuseum.org.
