Greg Hoy’s latest album, Hit Music, is more than just a collection of songs—it’s a testament to resilience, reinvention, and raw musicality. After a health scare forced the California rocker to pause live performances, he turned the challenge into an opportunity, rediscovering his craft in a way he never anticipated.
The realization hit mid-set at Berlin in New York City: Hoy’s left hand had gone completely numb. He powered through, but the symptoms persisted for the rest of his 14-show tour. A few weeks later, doctors diagnosed him with spinal arthritis, two fused vertebrae, and cervical radiculopathy—a condition that pinched the nerve running to his hand whenever he strapped on a guitar.
With his signature instrument temporarily sidelined, Hoy focused on another: drums. Renting a small room in Pacifica, California, he immersed himself in rhythm, playing along to influences like Fugazi, Don Caballero, and even Phil Collins-era Genesis.
‘I’d drop my daughter off at preschool, head straight to the studio, and just play whatever felt good,’ Hoy recalls. ‘It was a return to my earliest recording experiences—raw, instinctual, and completely live.’
Over six months, Hoy developed over 30 song ideas, laying down live drum tracks first and building compositions from the ground up. Sticking to strict self-imposed rules—full takes, no software trickery, and entirely live performances—he crafted an album that feels organic, urgent, and deeply personal.
Adding an unexpected twist, Hoy incorporated horns into the mix. He collaborated remotely with German trumpeter Kelly O’Donohue and legendary Pittsburgh saxophonist Ben Opie, expanding his sonic landscape while keeping the DIY ethos intact. Every other instrument on Hit Music —from drums to guitars to bass to keyboards—was played by Hoy himself, following in the footsteps of multi-instrumentalist icons like Jack White, Phil Collins, and Dave Grohl.
The album’s title was inspired by an old, cryptic sign outside a local steakhouse that simply read Hit Music. ‘I kept passing by it every day, and it just stuck,’ Hoy says. ‘It got me thinking—what if, instead of a greatest hits album, I made a record that felt like one?’
Armed with a fresh playing approach and a killer horn section, Greg Hoy is hitting the road in 2025 for a string of intimate, high-energy performances in support of Hit Music.
‘Both my back and my daughter would prefer shorter tours this year,’ Hoy jokes. ‘And who am I to fight nature?’
