HORSEBATH will release their debut album, Another Farewell, on February 7, 2025 via Strolling Bones Records. The Halifax, Nova Scotia & Montreal, Quebec-based band’s 10-song debut was co-produced by HORSEBATH & Niall Mutter and was recorded by Gilles Castilloux at The Treatment Room in Montreal. The band formed in 2021 and currently includes Daniel Connolly, Etienne Beausoleil, and brothers Keast and Dagen Mutter (with brother Niall co-producing their debut). Another Farewell reflects the dizzying breadth of their interests: the Tex-Mex rhythms of the Sir Douglas Quintet, the cowpoke eccentricities of Lee Hazlewood, the cosmic country of Gram Parsons, the somber self-reflection of Leonard Cohen, the out-of-time storytelling of The Band. And like that legendary Canadian/American quintet, HORSEBATH functions as a creative free-for-all, with nearly every member taking songwriting and lead vocal duties. They change up instruments from one song to the next, the better to coax out new sounds and ideas.
The four musicians are intimately connected to various corners of Canada, yet they are all drawn to the places in between, driven by the constant motion of touring in an electrifying young band. “Canada is so spread out,” says the band’s Dagen Mutter. “We spent a lot of time driving all night just for the sake of adventure. Honestly, that’s where a lot of the songs start. You’re in your own thoughts with your eyes on the road, and you just start humming.” Another Farewell is, perhaps inevitably, an album full of sad departures, but there are just as many exciting arrivals.
Today, Magnet Magazine premiered the album’s title track. HORSEBATH’s Keast Mutter said, “Life seems to be mostly about letting go at this point and cherishing the moments that make you feel especially human, or at least close to one. There’s plenty of devastation in beauty and it sadly goes both ways sooner or later. You can only smile gratefully at it all while you’ve got a chance.” Share HORSEBATH’s “Another Farewell” Here.
Brooklyn Vegan previously shared “In the Shade,” from Another Farewell, calling it “gorgeous” & “widescreen,” and saying the song “really spotlights HORSEBATH’s musical scope.” The band’s Daniel Connolly said, “‘In the Shade’ is a psychedelic question of oneself. It was written with Keast sitting in one bedroom and Etienne in the other, both playing away over a few days until the arrangement seemed to form through the walls. Pulling from characteristics of Buffalo Springfield and The Band, it invites listeners into a world where emotions linger like shadows, leaving an impression long after the music fades.” Holler also previously shared the album standout “Train to Babylon” as well. The song rides on a relentless groove with playful lyrics that beckon listeners to dance and lose themselves. A high-energy anthem, it carries the spirit of The Rolling Stones down its steel rails, picking up speed as it goes. Mutter says, “We found ourselves in a rolling energy and had this image in mind of a train picking up speed as the song follows. It’s an upbeat farewell with eyes on the track ahead.”
After traveling to Montreal, HORSEBATH had ten days to jam, write, and record Another Farewell. The band thrived on the intensity of the experience. “It created a flurry of writing,” says Keast, “and that became the theme of the album. Everything we did was an experiment of some kind. We were improvising with instruments and lyrics.” Together, they strove to capture the anarchic spirit of their live shows and every moment of musical serendipity. “We wanted to take an ego-less, music-first approach that features as many musical genres and influences as possible,” says Beausoleil. “I don’t think it can be categorized as a specific musical genre, but more as a feeling—of adventure, of the road, of beauty and heartbreak.”
HORSEBATH also announced their initial tour in support of Another Farewell with a 22-date run of performances throughout Sweden. Additional UK and European dates will also be announced soon. Please see current tour dates below.
