Masters of Drawing Group Exhibition

February 15 @ 8:00 am - March 7 @ 5:00 pm MST

Masters of Drawing Group Exhibition featuring 47 of the finest Western and Native Artists opens February 15 at Mark Sublette’s Medicine Man Gallery and The Maynard Dixon and Native American Art Museum – Show runs through March 7th

Masters of Drawing is a unique exhibition highlighting the art of drawing. Forty-seven nationally known artists will exhibit a diverse range of drawing styles and media inducing graphite, charcoal, colored pencils, pastels, and markers. Western Art has a love affair putting pencil to paper to capture the excitement, legacy, and monumental scale of the American West. Charles M. Russel, Edward Borein, Frederick Remington, and Maynard Dixon had drawing as a basis for their artistic process. The contemporary artists exhibiting retain that legacy with impressive skill and imagination.

The exhibition will include drawing studies hung side-by-side with the finished painting, revealing an often not-seen part of the artistic process. A highlight of the show is bringing together for the first time, two 1945 Maynard Dixon pencil sketches, and the finished 25 x 30 inch masterpiece, Navajos in a Canyon.

A group of rare pencil drawings by legendary Arizona artist Ed Mell, who passed away February 2024, will be available for sale, along with 46 other contemporary artists including: Tony Abeyta, Duke Beardsley, Shonto Begay, Thomas Blackshear II, Teal Blake, Amery Bohling, Eric Bowman, Rachel Brownlee, Scott Burdick, Jill Carver, Russell Case, Kevin Chupik, Stephen Datz, Glenn Dean, Jon Flaming, Whitney Gardner, Josh Gibson, Logan Maxwell Hagege, William Haskell, J.R. Hess, Donna Howell-Sickles, Hyrum Joe, Brett Allen Johnson, Kevin Kehoe, Francis Livingston, Susan Lyon, David Meikle, John Moyers, Terri Kelly Moyers, Greg Newbold, Mathieu Nozieres, Howard Post, Chuck Pyle, Glenn Renell, Ray Roberts, Sue Rother, Matt Ryder, Roseta Santiago, Matt Smith, Kathryn Stedham, Ezra Tucker, Nelson Tucker, Jordan Walker, Kim Wiggins, Jim Woodside, and Dennis Ziemienski.

Masters of Drawing will span both the main exhibition space at Medicine Man Gallery as well as the President’s Gallery at the new Maynard Dixon and Native American Art Museum around the corner.

Mark Sublette’s Medicine Man Gallery is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
