Join Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum staff for this special family-friendly live animal presentation. Meet and learn about some of our winged wonders. Discover how they manage to get airborne and use the power of flight for their unique roles in our desert ecosystem. Hands-on activities and props will be available to enhance your learning experience. Pre-registration required. Space is limited to 60 registrants.

Come join us for the third of four films in our Junior Ranger Summer Film Series! This event pairs well with our Winged Wonders of the Sonoran Desert presentation at 10:15 AM. Separate registration required. At 11:15 AM, enjoy a free screening of Migration (2023). Follow a mallard duck family in this animated feature as they embark on a thrilling, humorous, and challenging journey south for the winter. Enjoy popcorn and Junior Ranger giveaways for kids. Carlsbad Caverns, one of the oldest and most famous cave systems in the world, includes several vast underground chambers up to 250 feet high filled with amazing colorful formations of many shapes and sizes. Learn about the cave’s otherworldly natural wonders and follow scientists studying the cavern’s robust bat colony. Produced by the National Park Service, 2015. Running time: 16 minutes. No registration required, but space is limited. 

In-Person Presentation | Life Among the Javelinas

Whether you live in urban Tucson or out in the desert, you are likely to see javelinas parading through your yard. Say “javelina” to anyone living in “javie-country” and you are bound to get varied responses, from “Those ugly creatures are so destructive” to “I think their babies are so cute.” Whether you call them javelinas, peccaries, or four-legged wrecking balls, learn how to coexist with these interesting and often misunderstood creatures in this fascinating presentation by local naturalist Doris Evans. Pre-registration required. Space is limited to 60 registrants.

Join us for a special family-friendly, dynamic nature-themed jam with a live musical performance by the Desert Museum Family Band! Cool off and celebrate what makes our Sonoran Desert home such a special place. Sing, dance, and learn with original music in English and Spanish performed by Education Specialist, Michelle Constanza Miner and other talented musicians. This “edu-taining” event is part of the Oro Valley Summer Series and sponsored by the Oro Valley Chamber of Commerce and Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance (SACAA). No reservation required. Drop in for a song or two or stay for the whole set. Limited seating available.
