Open House Build: Rancho Feliz

Experience the power of purpose through a volunteer service weekend by building a home for a needy family.
For over 35 years, Rancho Feliz has been bringing people together to transcend cultural boundaries through education and service work on the Arizona/Mexico border. Rancho Feliz is hosting an Open House Build – Volunteer Experience Weekend on Thursday, November 30th, through Sunday, December 3rd. The weekend provides the unique opportunity for individuals with construction experience to make a lasting difference and change the entire trajectory of an underprivileged family in Agua Prieta, Sonora, just across the border from Douglas, Arizona. Weekend activities include building a wood frame home for a low income family, spreading joy with a piñata party, and packaging and distributing food to the needy.
The cost is $200 per person and volunteers must have previous construction experience to participate. Accommodations include:
● Transportation in Mexico provided by Rancho Feliz
● Daily meals
● All supplies and tools to build the home. (Bring your own tool belt if you have one).
● Dormitory sleeping arrangement and optional private rooms

Rancho Feliz specializes in offering onsite service opportunities for USA volunteers. According to Rancho Feliz founder Gil Gillenwater, “Our organization provides purposeful experiences that improve the lives of our American volunteers while at the same time helping those who were not born into our same fortunate circumstances. In a sense, “We feed their stomachs and they feed our souls. It works!”
Not a traditional charity, Rancho Feliz is based on Gillenwater’s philosophy of “enlightened self interest” where its work benefits both the volunteers and the recipients. By working on site in Agua Prieta, volunteers, many who have never witnessed extreme poverty, build homes and distribute food —and often in the process — gain a renewed sense of purpose. Families who receive this assistance, gain a renewed sense of dignity and hope.
