Tohono Chul will host a celebration of life to honor Lydia Reis, fondly known as “The Umbrella Lady”, from 2 pm to 4 pm on Monday, January 30, 2023. Reis was known throughout the Oro Valley and Tucson communities, often seen walking long distances along Oracle Road with a large umbrella. Reis passed away after succumbing to injuries sustained in a hit-and-run incident on January 8, 2023.
Tohono Chul looks forward to providing a space for remembrance, celebration, and grieving for the local community impacted by her death. “Tohono Chul has always been a place for healing and respite. Knowing that Lydia was a significant fixture in our community, it only felt right to honor her here”, says Jamie Maslyn Larson, Tohono Chul’s Executive Director.
A short program will begin at 2:30 pm in Tohono Chul’s Performance Garden with words from Reis’s brother, a local priest, and a harp performance. Following the program, refreshments will be served in the Garden Pavilion. Guests can show their support by bringing an umbrella. Admission to the park will be free during the event.
