Arizona Women’s Chorus Presents Holiday Concert Dec. 17
Ringing in the Holiday Season
The Arizona Women’s Chorus and the Sonoran Hand Bells with present a holiday concert on Dec. 17 at 3 pm. at St. Francis in the Foothills, 4625 E. River Rd. Tickets are $20.for adults. Children age 12 and under are admitted free.
The women’s chorus, conducted by founder and longtime artistic director Terrie Ashbaugh, will perform these musical selections: “Sing Hey!, Sleigh Bells, Silent Snowfall, Snow Is Falling, Water Under Snow is Weary, Tundra. and Snow! (Frosty, Let There Be Snow). There will be also carol singing with the audience after the program selections.
The last two pieces will be performed with the Sonoran Bells, established in Tucson in 1999. The artistic director is Shannon Casey. This ensemble is comprised of experienced handbell ringers chosen by audition. The group performs on a five-octave set of Malmark handbells, a five-octave set of Malmark Choirchimes, a three-octave set of Whitechapel handbells and a three-octave set of Petit-Fritsen handbells. In addition to concerts the group hosts festivals and workshops throughout the year. More information is available at sonoranbells.org.
The 70-plus-member Arizona Women’s Chorus traditionally presents two major concert programs a year, plus numerous community outreach activities throughout the season. The repertoire spans from classical music to Broadway, folk, jazz, spiritual, seasonal and other popular songs. The chorus was founded in 1981 as the Southern Arizona Women’s Chorus, then changed its name early in 2022 to the Arizona Women’s Chorus, Ashbaugh said.
She has led the chorus since 1998, including its 2006 Carnegie Hall debut. She is also a professional pianist, vocalist and choral arranger.
