Responsibility and Repair: A Conversation with Men

April 8, 2023 @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pm MST

EMERGE TO HOST A COMMUNITY CONVERSATION HIGHLIGHTING MEN’S ROLE IN REDUCING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TUCSON, ARIZONA.

Emerge Center Against Domestic Abuse proudly presents Responsibility and Repair: A Conversation with Men, an event that will showcase a series of short storytelling videos created by Emerge’s Men’s Education Program (MEP). The event will be held on Saturday, April 8, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at The Loft Cinema, located at 3233 E. Speedway Blvd. Due to limited capacity, individuals interested in attending can save a spot by registering here: https://conta.cc/3meLpVl.

Through these videos, men who completed the 26-week Men’s Education Program share their personal journeys with understanding and choosing to stop the intergenerational cycle of abuse. After the screening, Emerge will host a panel discussion on the vital role men can play in responding to and eliminating domestic abuse in our community. Panelists, including the videos’ creators, will discuss how building communities of men working to support one another leads to practices of responsibility and repair. The panel discussion will also include perspectives and voices from advocates and survivors. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with the panelists following the event.
The event will also launch a new Emerge project funded by the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women. The project will create a community support space and call-in helpline for men in Pima County who are currently harming their intimate partners or are at risk of causing harm. These services will prioritize the safety of survivors by supporting their male partners with identifying safer choices and creating a support network that reinforces responsibility and repair while inviting all men in Pima County to play a leadership role in preventing violence. At the event, Emerge will provide further details about the community support space, the call-in helpline, and additional information about getting involved through volunteer opportunities.

“The call-in helpline will provide support and consistency for men to make healthy, safe choices in their relationships as an expansion of the Men’s Education Program. These types of services are critical to shifting the burden and responsibility that rests on survivors to navigate safely in their relationships alone. We are building a community that can support safety rooted in community-based interventions.” Anna Harper-Guerrero, Executive Vice President & Chief Strategy Officer at Emerge.
This new project will be operated by trained Emerge MEP staff and volunteers and will be housed in Emerge’s MEP facility and other community-based spaces in Tucson (not a victim-services site). The community space and helpline will be available for any male-identified person who has used or is considering using abusive behavior toward an intimate partner. The project will create access points for men wanting to practice accountability and who need support to change their behaviors.

While the new Emerge project will focus on supporting male-identified partners, Emerge recognizes and values the experiences of all survivors and is committed to providing resources and support to everyone who needs it.
About the Men’s Education Program (MEP)
The Men’s Education Program at Emerge seeks to engage men in meaningful conversations about the ways that power and privilege can lead to abuse and violence in our community. The program prepares men to take responsibility for their choices and behavior, stop the abuse, and lead conversations on issues of domestic abuse with other men in the community.
