Emerge Center Against Domestic Abuse celebrates October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month with ‘Liberation through Love;’ Unveiling New Initiatives for Healing and Community Support. TUCSON, ARIZONA – October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about domestic abuse, supporting survivors, and creating a culture of healing. This year, Emerge Center Against Domestic Abuse will raise awareness in the community about the unique experiences and barriers that survivors of domestic abuse face.
During October, Emerge will launch a new community space titled “Lunchtime Insights: A Bite-Sized Emerge Presentation.” In this monthly space, Emerge will facilitate educational presentations on the intersections of historical, systemic and community conditions and the prevalence of domestic abuse.
The first presentation, “Exploring the Community Accountability Model for Domestic Abuse Prevention,” will take place on Tuesday, October 17, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Community members who want to participate can register here: https://conta.cc/46b7J4h
This presentation will address the intersections of domestic abuse and a community-based model of understanding violence. Presenters Anna Harper, Executive Vice President & Chief Strategy Officer, and Sheronda Jordan, Vice President of Organizational Development, will also share how the community’s response and/or lack of response to abuse and violence is the very thing that teaches and reinforces that violence.
During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Emerge will also launch its podcast, “Liberation through Love.” Listeners will hear about the profound impact of practices such as love, safety, innovation, responsibility and repair, liberation, and joy in supporting survivors. The monthly podcast will feature conversations with community guests as Emerge delves into the heart of meaningful change, addressing domestic abuse through community-driven solutions. The first episode will premiere on Wednesday, October 25.
“As we observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month, it is crucial that we recognize the vital role our community plays in addressing and preventing domestic abuse,” says Emerge CEO, Ed Sakwa. “Domestic abuse thrives in silence and isolation, but when we come together as a community, we send survivors a powerful message of support and solidarity.”
In partnership with Sun Tran and The Loft Cinema, Emerge will hold a Stuff-the-Bus event to collect starting-over supplies to support individuals fleeing domestic abuse. The event will take place on Saturday, October 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Loft Cinema. This year, in addition to the collection drive, Emerge will introduce the Family Resource Fair. This expansion brings together organizations dedicated to supporting families in Pima County, offering a unique platform for the community to access resources. The Family Resource Fair will begin at 12 p.m. and end at 3 p.m. Community members who want to contribute to the Stuff the Bus collection drive can visit https://emergecenter.org/stuff-the-bus/.
The community can also join Emerge in raising awareness about domestic abuse and stand in solidarity with survivors on National Wear Purple Day. On October 19, wear purple clothing or accessories, take a photo and share it on social media. Photos can be sent to communications@emergecenter.org or shared on personal social media profiles by tagging @EmergeTucson and using the hashtag #paintpimapurple.
