The Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus will present two CLASSIC CONCERT annual performances to initiate its historic 85th Anniversary. Tucson’s east side concert is Saturday, March 2, 7:30pm at Our Mother of Sorrows Church, 1800 S. Kolb Road. The northwest side presentation is Sunday, March 3, 3:00pm at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 7570 N Thornydale Road.
Under the direction of Dr. Julian Ackerley, the chorus performs time-honored music representing a wide range of repertoire. Included will be selections from Baroque masters as Vivaldi, Schütz, Bach and Handel as well as modern works accompanied by a string trio.
In addition to the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus, the Phoenix Boys Choir will be featured special guests. They are led by Artistic Director, Herbert Washington. PBC will present its own segment in the first half including the world premiere of “Foreign Lands,” by Polish composer Zuzanna Koziej.
After a brief intermission, the boys’ pure treble voices will be joined with the tenors and basses of the Young Men’s Ensembles from both the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus and the Phoenix Boys Choir. The combined choirs will perform Coronation Anthems written by G. F. Handel for use at the coronation of King George II in 1727. It will be partnered with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Make A Joyful Noise the Coronation Anthem for King Charles III premiered in May 2023.
Every member of the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus, including the younger Cadet Choir, TowneSingers and Northwest Voices will conclude the concert in a grand finale. Immediately following the concert, all in attendance are invited to enjoy cake while meeting the boys and conductors in a kickoff celebration of the group’s 85th Anniversary.
