13th Annual Power of the Purse

On Thursday, March 7th, 2024, The Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is proud to present the 13th Annual Power of the Purse. This year’s theme, “Women in Arts,” shines a spotlight on artistic expression and entrepreneurial spirit. We will explore the versatility of this industry, such as painters, dancers, musicians, and more. The goal is to amplify the creative voices of women in our community. We will learn from past experiences, insights, and stories of navigating both the artistic and entrepreneurial worlds. It’s a celebration of women making a mark in the dynamic intersection of art and business. We’re thrilled to announce our Keynote Speaker, Jamila Gilbert!
Jamila Gilbert is a Latina woman of Purépechan-Mexican roots, a visual artist, a communications professional who speaks four languages, and an astronaut. Aboard the Unity 25 mission on May 25, 2023, Jamila became the the 4th Latina to have flown to space, one of the first 100 women astronauts in history (83rd), and only the 650th human in space.
A proud New Mexico State University Aggie, Jamila holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Museum Conservation, a supplementary major in Linguistics, and minors in Studio Art and Anthropology. Her passion for foreign languages and visual storytelling have informed her professional background in marketing, graphic design, and communications. Jamila is a communications professional working in aerospace.
Jamila lives, works, and savors life in the beautiful southwest in her hometown of Las Cruces, New Mexico, which she particularly loves for its endless and unobstructed skies.
